Steel cuts oats.  Most oats, rolled, instant and quick cooking are all the same except for size. All have been steamed, passed through steel rollers to flatten, chopped and dropped into bags/boxes.  Some have been further conditioned with sugar or added flavors and massive price increases. But steel cut have not been steamed and are more like rice grains before cooking but chopped into bits.

I take say half a cup of the steel oats, add cup or more of boiling water, cover and let sit o'nite. Best if kept warm and sometimes i use a wide-mouth vacuum bottle. Morning comes and ready to eat. Or if too chewy cook a bit. My tasty secret; i add some curry powder, soy sauce and some kind of protein often a hard egg or tofu. If too dry add hot water. The curry spice has a good rep for preventing colon cancer (who wants that) and adds a lot of flavor.  More and more i find the white sugar of modern life not good for me.  Health food? Maybe, but comparatively very cheap for healthy food.

@joekelly thanks for the recipe. I too try to stay away from sugar and especially HFC that is ubiquitous in today's processed food.

Anyone else ever mix cereals? Sometimes I'll combine Frosted Flakes with Corn Flakes or Wheaties to cut down the sweetness a bit.

My SO will mix as many as 5 or 6 different kinds in a large storage container. :w00t:

I love oatmeal and steel oats @joekelly but I have a sweet tooth. I cook mine with milk and add apples, raisins, cinnamon or brown sugar sometimes a touch of butter. I'm like you, I haven't had more than a couple of boxes of processed cereals in the last decade. When I do so, they are too cloyingly sweet. I've been eating all natural peanut butter for awhile as well. When I have Skippy or similar, it's like someone doused sugar in my PB
