Need some equipment advice from the players here. I've finally started seeing improvement in my game and dropped from a 30 handicap to a 22 in a few months and now gunning to get to at least an 18 by the end of the year. I’ve finally got a driver, putter, irons, and hybrids that I am fine with but I have never used my fairway woods.

I’m am able to hit my driver about 220 yards and my #3 hybrid about 180 yards off the tee. So I am looking for filling in the gap between 181-219 yards and was looking into getting a #3 or #4 Fairway Wood. I’ve never had much luck in the trajectory of my Top-Flite HCT Tour woods and even after trying out my friend’s Callaway ERC Fusion and Adams Tight Lies woods, I haven’t been overly impressed. For some reason I generate a wicked slice with the #3 & #5 but am fine with my driver and hybrids. I will mainly use this club off the tee since I have trouble with the longer shafted clubs on the fairways. Since I will be using this mainly on long par 4s, I don’t really want to spend more than a $100 so here is a list of new #3 or #5 woods I can get around that price range. Can anyone recommend any of these or point out other good low-priced woods?

I got a Max Fli Black Max on sale last week end at dicks for about 45$. The club was marked down to 60$ from 129.99, and i had 15 off, and it was no tax day. I'm sure you could find something reasonable at your sporting goods store, or you could get something used.

I have been using Adam's Ovation 2 fairway woods and have had a good run with them. Dick's Sports currently is selling off their inventory. May want to check out their website.

Doin' my best to keep 'em in the short grass,

Since you swing your hybrid well, why don't you try a 16 degree hybrid instead of a 3 or 4 wood? The hybrids are easier to hit than any other club. The previous year Cobra model, that is the non DWS Baffler, is selling for around $99 with the same Aldila graphite shaft as the current model. I think the Bafflers are great clubs and much easier to hit than a 3 wood. Give this a try and let us know what you think.

P.S. the adams rpm is very hard to hit for me, don't like the shape of the head.

Cleveland Launcher isn't bad. I got one this year - but my dad gave me his Bobby Jones 3 wood since he likes his F-Speed better though...Bobby Jones woods are way better then anything on that list, or at least IMO...Bobby Jones fairway woods are so easy to hit because they are easy to get in the air with the shallow face...so..consider them..

The reason I am looking into a Fairway wood instead of a lower lofted hybrid is that I'd like a larger face on the club and a bigger forgiveness factor. With the price on hybrids and some fairway woods nearly identical since I'm buying last years models, I'd rather get a fairway wood for now.

I've recently ordered "The Perfect Club" (web site is their name). They seem to specialize in shorter length shafts with heavier swingweights in the clubhead. I've always struggled with longer shafted clubs especially fairway woods so the shorter length shaft sounds like something that will do me good. Oh and all their clubs seem to be below $100 per club.

Rockbottomgolf.com is running a special on the Adams fairway woods. $69.99.

Also, start diggin around in the used bins at the driving range and golf outlets, there's usually some good deals in there.
I'm only at 13 clubs in the bag, what do you reccomend as a 14th? My foot wedge?

Not exactly a low-priced option, but I just picked up a new 2007 Big Bertha 3-wood. All I can say is, wow! That is easily the best fairway wood I've ever hit. I hit probably 75 balls in the simulator, all off the deck, and mishit maybe 2-3 of them. And even those were decent. Awesome club.

    • I had two events the past two days. Yesterday I was playing a course blind. Hit it solid. Hit 9/14 fairways, 12/18 greens, 34 putts. Many of those putts were the result of balls that were close-ish to the hole when they landed, but wound up a long way away once they'd finished rolling (backwards mainly). Then today, hit 11/13 fairways, 11/18 greens, 37 putts, and shot 80. 8 over par and it wasn't particularly pretty. My big problem today was my pitching. I was inside 100 yards of the hole and off the green on 9 occasions.  1st - drive to about 75 yards, fanned a 58 degree short and right. On the green, but a good 40 feet away and good two putt from there (so took 3) 2nd - laid up to a bunker and it's narrow past it, so had 165 in, missed it right with an 8 iron. Wet rough, chip from about 5 yards off the green and the club snagged. It got on the green, but only temporarily. Overcorrected a bit on the next one and hit it a bit firm and it rolled out to about 35 feet. Putt didn't break and it ran on a bit and I missed the one back (greens were fast and a little bumpy, which didn't help, but doesn't excuse either). (took 5 to get down from close to the green) 4th - had about 95 from the right rough, hit it on the green and two putts (3) 5th - 90 from the fairway, tugged it and it got a firm bounce, chipped on and hit what I thought was a decent chip, but it ran out down the hill and two putts from 20 feet (4) 7th - 65 from the fairway, significant upslope and hit it a bit hard, ran long left against the collar. Tried to blade a PW, but it got under a bit so didn't advance it anything like far enough. Made a good two putt from there (4) 11th - 63 from the fairway, hit a squirrelly pitch on the green and two putts (3) 12th - 75 from the semi-rough, caught it a bit clean and it wound up on the back edge. Putting down a tier and it ran 8 feet past (that was actually a really good putt and couldn't have done any better I don't think) and missed that (4) 13th - 55 from the fairway, overcorrected and hit the big ball before the small ball. Then made a stellar up and down from 25 yards short to an elevated green with a putter (3) 15th - down in three from a greenside bunker (3) That was it. The other 9 holes I hit it on the green from outside 100 yards. So on those 9 occasions, I took 32 shots to get in the hole. 3.56 average. Terrible. Reason I'm posting this in here is to see if anyone has any suggestions for how to work on my contact with pitch shots. I don't have access to a grass range. Only mats and it's easy off a mat. Partly I think my problem is I've hit it off mats so much this winter that I've lost my judgement on where the ball is versus the ground because of the leeway granted. Open to ideas. I also suspect that under pressure I stand a bit closer to it and then get steep and hit down on it and it puts me in a bad place, but I can't seem to get myself to not do that.

    • Day 251 4-30 Worked on pelvis "going back" slightly in transition. Once i started getting some feel for it, added in wrist arching through. All done slower.
    • I've been putting whilst looking at the hole and it's definitely helped my distance control
