Hey Guys

I consider myself as a relatively new golfer. I started about 6 months ago but have managed to play on average 2 times a week. I also have been having a few lessons from my father in law who is a scratch golfer and has been for years. I was playing with some hand me down MDgolf irons and was advised to invest in some more because my swing was better than the clubs were suggesting.

Being 23 I dont have loads of spare cash lying around to spend on new clubs. I was advised to get some Cleveland CG16 irons as we found a good deal. I then found a better deal on some CG16 Tour irons with a free wedge so decided to go for them.

Before having the irons I was hitting around 100 on my local par 69 course (im a 28 handicap still). Since getting the clubs iv played 3 rounds, 103, 98 and 93. What im wondering is would i have seen this improvement with the normal CG16s? Should i have maybe got them first to bridge the gap considering my hadicap? I thought by getting the tour version they may last me longer so that i didnt have to invest again so soon.

Also just got myself a couple of hybrids so hopefully they will help me improve the score too!

The regular version of the clubs would be more forgiving, but as a new golfer, your primary issue is your swing, not your equipment. It's not as if you'd be shooting in the 80s if you just got the other clubs. Learn to hit the ball on the sweetspot and the euipment difference will be fairly minimal.

Thats ok then. I seem to be hitting it well 9/10 times then the other time it will either be a big divot behind the ball or me topping it. Im hitting it about 20 yard further with each iron.

Fats and tops aren't caused by equipment and even the most SGI iron on the planet won't help with that. I find people tend to over blow the difference between GI and player's irons. GIs won't make you hit the ball any better but you may get better results from the hit. If you're hitting the ground 6" behind the ball it doesn't really matter what kind of clubhead you're doing it with.

Thanks for the replies guys. Feel abit more settled about having the tour version now. I suppose seeing an instant improvement is something to encourage me.

Correct, the only thing that could help with slight fat shots is a wide sole, and higher bounce on the irons. This will help the club glide through the turf slightly better, and I mean slightly. Believe me, I have chunked high bounce wedges before. So there is a threshold on angle of attack for those things, and I have bypassed it many of time in my career. :-D

Basically better player irons tend to have less weighting towards the outside of the iron and hence less forgiving on mishits. Doesn't matter for good hits though, all the irons are basically the same except SGI and GI's will launch higher.

It's probably a good thing that you have better equipment. In that I mean (IMHO) cheap equipment tends to make for bad habits that are hard to break when you do finally pull the trigger on some good quality sticks.

Probably the best advice I would give is, practice that swing. Don't be a hitter of the ball, be a swinger of the club and just let the ball get in the way of the swing. I see new golfers all the time trying to kill the ball on the downswing. Let the club do the work. That's why there are so many in the bag!

Yeah i'm not a big hitter atall. I tried hitting it harder and ended up going shorter. I hit my 7 iron about 150 when i connect properly. Only have 5-pw and then 2 hybrids as cant hit woods

    • I hope you don't mind me raising this one from the dead. I got shortgamechef's video access thing for a few months in 2024. I watched his yip fix videos (the general gist is similar to the first video above, but with a lot more detail) and it made a lot of sense. I was working on it in my backyard off a mat for a while and my yippy thing was mostly gone. Aside from anything else, the flop shot using that technique is so easy and controllable. But I got onto a golf course for the first time of the year and found myself by the green on a downslope with the ball sitting down a little in the rough and I was, not to put too fine a point on it, f***ed. Shallow is all well and good from a good flat lie and I understand it, but you can't make that your be all and end all. I still don't know if it's a good idea to use steep all the time or just when you need to. I have a hard enough time with one technique, let alone too.  Just got a pitching skillest lesson with Erik and unless I misunderstood things some, he wants me a bit steeper. @iacas - where do you fall on the steep vs shallow argument and how do you vary it according to need?
