Did anybody see the interview with the dutch speed skating coach?

Quote:

Dutch speedskating coach Jillert Anema knows how the United States can improve on its Olympic 0-fer on the Sochi ovals -- stop playing sports like football.

"You have a lot of attention for foolish sport, like American football," Anema told CNBC on Friday. "You waste a lot of talent, athletic talent, in a sport where it's meant to kill each other, to injure each other.

"... (The U.S.) is so narrow-minded, and you waste a lot of good talent in a sport that sucks."

The U.S. assured itself of its first medal shutout in the long-track events since 1984. No American placed higher than seventh in an individual event, and the men's team was relegated to the "D" final, which will decide the last two positions in the eight-team field.

On the short track, only a silver medal in the 5,000-meter relay kept the U.S. from its first shutout since 1988.

Anema believes the United States could do so much better with an improved infrastructure in the sport.

"When you compete once every four years, with talent, with a few lone wolves who are skating, you can't beat the world," Anema told CNBC. "It's no way."

You can't blame Anema for being a bit cocky as the Dutch have won 21 of the country's 22 medals on the speedskating ovals in Sochi.

"I think that the gold medal in speedskating is just as valuable as the gold medal in basketball, and we won 22.

"You'll never win 22 in basketball."

I think its very funny. The guy is obviously super excited, and with good reason, but man his logic sucks.  Its hard to win 22 medals in basketball when there are two events and each country enters only one team in each, lol.  And his ranting about american football draining talent from real sports like speed skating?  hahaha.

However, between each Winter Olympics, there are hundreds of thousands of American football games played at all levels that generate orders of magnitude more interest from the public than speed skating.  There are 2092 NFL games played in four years, with multiple billions of $ in revenue.  Why in heaven's sake would we switch to speed skating?

And historically, in 173 speed skating events, we have 6 fewer gold medals than the dutch.  Its funny to be slammed for being #2 in some obscure sport.

Eric Heiden won all the individual golds in Lake Placid, 1980.  I didn't hear him tell the Dutch that they should stop focusing on other sports.

    • Hello Golfing Buddies, It has been awhile since I posted but I am the Retired Old Man that asked for advice because I suffered two "T.I.A.'s about switching from playing right handed to playing left handed.  I purchased a Callaway Edge Left handed golf clubs. I changed the grips to oversize grips.  Well, two weeks ago and still at 79 years old, I shot a 44 and 47 on a small course in my hometown.  I am currently changing my shafts from regular flex to Senior flex.  So, you can see' it can be done! So, you other old timers; get with the program! Blessings to all of you. Retired Old Man (Terry Warner)

    • Probably since the golfer has to swing the club back and up. The hands have to move back and up. You can feel them go back and up just by turning the shoulders and bending the right arm, because it brings your hands towards your right shoulder.  The difference is if you maintain width or not. Less width means a shorter feeling swing path so the more you need to lift the arms. Being as someone who gets the right arm bend at 110+ degrees, it's 100% a timing issue. I am use to like a 1.5+ second backswing. It probably should be like 1 second at most. Half a second or more will feel like an eternity. I have had swings where I keep my right arm straighter and I am still trying to time the downswing based on the old tempo.  Ideally, for me, it is probably going to be a much quicker and shorter (in duration) backswing, while keeping the right elbow straighter. Which also means more hinging to get swing length without over swinging.

    • I'm currently recuperating from surgery, so no golf, but have been thinking about this quite a bit. This and the don't overbend the right arm thing. It's hard for me to even pose the position, so I'm not 100% sure, but I feel like it's impossible to have the right humerus along the shirt seam and not overbend your right arm, unless your hands are down near your hips. If the left arm is up at or above the shoulder plane and your right arm is bent less than 90 degrees, then your right humerus has to raise or your hands will get pulled apart. Your left hand can't reach your right hand unless either the right upper arm is up or the right arm is overbent. Is that right? If it is, then focusing on not overbending the right arm would force you to raise the humerus. And actually thinking further on it, if you do overbend your right arm, then you're basically forcing your upper arm down or forcing your left arm to bend. Since (for me at least) bending the left arm too much is not something I think I need to worry about, it means that the bend in the trail arm is really the driving force behind what happens to the right humerus.
