2-iron? Why? No offense, but why play outdated technology? They have designed hybrids and fairways utility clubs that severely dwarf the performance of a 2-iron. They even have hybrids that can be adjusted for a lower penetrating trajectory.. Absolutely no need to a 2-iron, many would argue, no need for a 3-iron any longer..

Mostly because I don't like looking at hybrids and I like hitting long irons. I am much more accurate with long irons. They have also made great strides in technology in golf shoes too.....just saying...

Lol! You don't need to justify hitting your clubs, aesthetics are important as you describe, but you will never, ever find someone agree that a 2-iron in 2014 performs like the advanced technology in today's clubs that achieve accuracy and distance along with higher ball flight and a cleaner strike from tougher lies... It's yours, play it, enjoy it! But sounds like you even know deep down, it's a disadvantage, even if the slightest...but hey 2-irons do look great!

I was just answering your question. Also if I thought the hybrid was an advantage, I would have kept it. I would hit a 7 wood over a hybrid. I could alternate the 4 wood and 2 iron but I just don't. I like the 2 iron enough to keep it in the bag.

I agree that they perform differently. Truth is with my next set, I will probably go back to the 4 wood unless I don't sell the 2 with the set.

A couple of my older sets have 1 and 2 irons, and when I play with those sets I usually use the 1 or 2 a couple of times per round. My 3 hybrid goes about as far and is easier to hit for me.

More importantly, how do you play without a 7 iron?

I think the only thing comparable between a hybrid and a 2 iron is the distance they may go. Different ball flights, one is more workable and the other more forgiving. When comparing the two clubs I think it comes down to the Indian, not the arrow.

I also think a 2 iron is a great club to practice ball striking with; given the amount of feedback it provides. In fact, I hit 100 2irons last night into the net before bed. My first two years of high school golf I carried a Mizuno tzoid pro II 1 iron that was an absolute screamer off the tee. Looking back though it was a wasted club in my bag when comparing the number of times I hit it vs the number of times I could have used a 60* wedge or maybe even a 5/7wood.

I have an old one that I use for practice swings and sometimes hit with it.  Even when I hit it decent (which is rare), it flies really low.  I can't see myself ever using it on the course for any reason.

Ha ha. I have recently become addicted to playing vintage clubs and scrounged clubs. The irons in the sig were bought for $20 bucks missing both the 6 and 7. I have played a couple of 9's with them paired with the Eye-2 woods that were gifted by a buddy that knows I like playing old stuff. I made it around by choking down on the 5 or ripping the 8, but there were a couple shots where I needed one in between. My distance is erratic enough that i probably don't need 2 in between; in other words hackers are better off hitting the longer club. I could have gone all Hogan on you I guess and said "There are no 7 iron shots at my home course" LOL

    • Never practiced golf when I was young and the only lesson ever taken was a driver lesson. I feel like I'm improving every year. However, the numbers don't support my feeling about improving. I usually drop to 12-13 during the summer while playing the familiar courses around home and then go on golf trips in the fall to new courses and increase to end the year between 15-17. Been a similar story for a number of years now but hey, it's the best thing there is in life so not too bothered but reaching 9.9 is the objective every year. Maybe a few lessons and practice could help me achieve it since I pretty much have no idea what I'm doing, just playing and never practice.
    • I am semi-loyal. Usually buy four dozen of one ball and only play that until out and then determine whether to continue or try another one. Since starting my semi-loyal path to success, I've been playing the below, not in order: ProV1 ProV1x ProV1x left dash AVX Bridgestone BXS Srixon Z-star XV I am not sure if it has helped anything, but it gives a bit of confidence knowing that it at least is not the ball (while using the same one) that gives different results so one thing less to mind about I guess. On the level that I am, not sure whether it makes much difference but will continue since I have to play something so might as well go with the same ball for a number of rounds. Edit: favorite is probably the BXS followed by ProV1/Srixon Z-star XV. Haven't got any numbers to back it up but just by feel.
    • Will not do it by myself, going to the pro shop I usually use after Cristmas for input and actually doing the changes, if any, but wanted to get some thoughts on whether this was worthwhile out of curiosity.
    • In terms of ball striking, not really. Ball striking being how good you are at hitting the center of the clubface with the swing path you want and the loft you want to present at impact.  In terms of getting better launch conditions for the current swing you have, it is debatable.  It depends on how you swing and what your current launch conditions are at. These are fine tuning mechanisms not significant changes. They might not even be the correct fine tuning you need. I would go spend the $100 to $150 dollars in getting a club fitting over potentially wasting money on changes that ChatGPT gave you.  New grips are important. Yes, it can affect swing weight, but it is personal preference. Swing weight is just one component.  Overall weight effects the feel. The type of golf shaft effects the feel of the club in the swing. Swing weight effects the feel. You can add so much extra weight to get the swing weight correct and it will feel completely different because the total weight went up. Imagine swinging a 5lb stick versus a 15lb stick. They could be balanced the same (swing weight), but one will take substantially more effort to move.  I would almost say swing weight is an old school way of fitting clubs. Now, with launch monitors, you could just fit the golfer. You could have two golfers with the same swing speed that want completely different swing weight. It is just personal preference. You can only tell that by swinging a golf club.
    • Thanks for the comments. I fully understand that these changes won't make any big difference compared to getting a flawless swing but looking to give myself the best chance of success at where I am and hopefully lessons will improve the swing along the way. Can these changes make minor improvements to ball striking and misses then that's fine. From what I understood about changing the grips, which is to avoid them slipping in warm and humid conditions, is that it will affect the swing weight since midsize are heavier than regular and so therefore adding weight to the club head would be required to avoid a change of feel in the club compared to before?
