Are you happy with your current network of golf buddies?

Growing up, I was the only golfer out of my friends and family, so naturally I played with random people most rounds. Although this was a great way to meet new golfing buddies, the vast majority of pairings were with people of different ages, skill levels, and overall different outlooks on what type of round they wanted.

HS and College tournaments were great because I was constantly playing with golfers my age and at my skill level, but it wasn't practical to exchange contact info with golfers I was competing against.

So, long story short, I created an app which is designed to help golfers discover their ideal golfing experience with like-minded golfers at the courses they wish to play. It allows golfers to keep track of their favorite golfing buddies, the courses they want to play, and have played- while also allowing you to rate those courses.

I would love to hear everyone's thoughts on their network of golfing buddies, how do you communicate with everyone, and how do you schedule games with one another?

Thanks for the reply Joe, much appreciated. I find myself in that situation a lot of times as well...people's schedules are busier than ever. There are a ton of variables that go into finding someone you want to golf with, at courses in your price range, at times that are convenient.  That is is one of many reasons we feel a social platform like ours is the only way you can truly discover your ideal golf experience on a consistent basis, while also building your network of golfing buddies.

Friend through my golf club that I'm regularly paired with in tournaments -- fantastic. He's one of my favorite playing partners in my time with the sport. Friend who introduced me to golf -- last few years made deliberate attempts to get under my skin during a round. Makes trash talk personal. I'd usually rather not play with him. Best friend -- got married and bought a house. Bought a new hybrid recently; I asked him if it was an Adams, and before I could list another brand, he told me it was a Ford Focus. He hasn't played golf in a while, and probably won't any time soon :-( Part of why I'm happy that TST meetups are becoming regular things. I've met three people through TST previously, and all were great. I'd love to play with any of them again.

I'm pleased with my golf buddies, but I wish I had more. Like others have mentioned, I play alone many times because of conflicting schedules.

Everyone wishes they had more golfing buddies, which is why we are firm believers in building our your network so that you can find the round you are looking for at the times that are convenient for you.  It is fun to mix it up with different golfers from time to time, just like it is fun to play new courses- variety is the spice of life!

We have 16 on our golf this year (play bi-weekly, as well as a fall trip). We pretty much all agree that 16 is the largest we want to have it. We get to play with different people (though we don't all always get along, and we do have our preferences). When we want to get out for a random round, we'll shoot out a group e-mail and whoever can make it, does.

Grew up with three older brothers, so I had a built in foursome. Now, I have a son and two daughters. I was smart enough to leave an opening for myself in that foursome, something my father must not have thought about.

We get to play with different people (though we don't all always get along, and we do have our preferences). When we want to get out for a random round, we'll shoot out a group e-mail and whoever can make it, does.

2) How often do you play with your children? Have you ever wanted to find another father-son or father-daughter combo to play with? We have a 'Parents with Kids' game option which emphasizes family golf.  No need to view those 5 hours as a burden on family time, but rather, make that a bonding experience!

My golfing network really goes as far as one guy.  My best friend and golf coach.  I have lots of other friends that play golf but most of them rarely play.  I have played a grand total of two rounds in the last year where I was not playing with my regular partner.  One of them I was out of state at my annual Army buddy meet up and the other was a random weekday I happened to be off.  We both work in the same office with cubes next to each other so it just works out.  Since there are two of us and we are always willing to meet/play with other people I am going to look into it.

And it's downloaded.  I will check it out and get the word out.  Very cool.

Edit:  Ok, one thing that would be nice is ability to choose which days of the week.  I usually golf on mondays so weekday was the best answer.  That leaves it open a lot for people looking for somebody to play on say, a Thursday.

We have an ongoing e-mail chain (that does get exhaustive now and again). Sometimes they get too conversational, but it's all good. A lot of quick reads and deletes. When something new or important comes up - i.e. plans for our next outing, statistics, details from our yearly tracking sheet, etc... - I just change the subject line. We don't keep track of too many individual statistics, but do keep track of yearly points, yearly prize money, individual outing results, groupings (so we can change up as much as possible). I'm the coordinator, and if I really need someone to get back to me, and they haven't in a day or two, I'll just give them a call.

As far as my kids, my son is 17 and heading off to college in the fall, so I hope to play with him as much as possible this summer. Started him when he was 10 or 11. He can't break 100, but we still have fun. My daughters are 13 and 11 and don't go out too often. I like taking them during Twilight at my local course, when it's cheap and usually pretty wide open. Wife complains that I play too much, but she lets me slide when I have one (or all) of the kids with me. I haven't really thought about playing in an organized family thing. Truth be told, my son doesn't like playing with others too much, as he gets nervous and sometimes embarrassed. He's 17, plays maybe 8-10 times a year, and thinks he should be a scratch.

Golf has a very steep learning curve, which can be daunting for beginners, but we don't like looking at that curve as a negative.  However, we believe the solution is providing a golf environment that puts each golfer in their comfort zone by helping them discover golfers who are at the same point in the learning curve.

Wouldn't being able to search for a  'friendly' game with other 'parents with kids' who have around a '25' handicap...solve that problem for your son? Just a thought...

Just out of curiosity, do you guys always play the same course or do you like to explore new tracks? Discovering new courses to play at has been a priority of mine the last few years, which is why we thought it was crucial to integrate a database of every course in America for golfers to filter based on price, location, and name.

We're in the Baltimore area, and we usually play the same dozen or so courses within an hour's drive (Baltimore County, Carroll County, Harford County, and up into Southern Pa where the courses are a little nicer and a little less expensive). Last year we expanded a little with some new courses that we were able to find deals on through Groupon or some othr coupons somewhere. We also try to vary the style of courses. For example, there are a few shorter courses that barely break 6,000 yards, but they are tight and penalizing. And then there are a few that almost reach 6,500 from the whites, but they are more wide-open. The longer hitters obviously prefer those.
