If I could only play one round and had to shoot the lowest score I could shoot I would walk. If I had to shoot the lowest score I could shoot with no strings attached I would pick my third round of the day in a cart. Usually takes me two rounds to figure out exactly what in the Hell is going on and what I can and can't do very well that day. Each round I play in a day gets progressively better.

Walk = Lower score. Why do I think this. It is a mind over matter thing. When you walk you take your time on each shot. As if you miss hit you have to wall all over the place to get to the ball. So you try harder to hit that clean shot so you go right down the fairway.

I find this to be true with my game when I ride. I tend to start to rush things. Sometimes, I will just take a short walk from green to the next tee box. Or if I am playing a hole well, I will walk from my approach shot to the green just to get back into a setting I am use to.

I'd like to hear people's opinions regarding whether scoring well in a round of golf is in someway diminished if you rode in a cart for the entire round.  From my perspective, "true" golf is only played when one walks a course as this certainly requires a degree of physical stamina that riding in a cart simply does not demand. ...

Don't underestimate energy needed for playing golf and riding a cart. Fitness studies show that a person who plays 18 and carries a bag burns about 1,700 calories. A person who rides a cart still burns about 1,200 calories.

As for affect on score, It depends. If it's 100 degrees out, I play better when I ride.

I walk on par 3 courses and flatter nine hole courses, but normally ride for 18.

For one thing, my home course is not really "walkable." It is one of the subdivision courses in the county, and walking is not allowed during peak play or on weekends.. (Back in the 1990s, about a half dozen groups built courses with housing developments around them. The houses and neighborhoods are nice, but about half the lots never found a home buyer due to overbuilding.) These courses all have two or three stretches where it's about 400 yards or more from green to the next tee. People on foot get run into the ground by the golf cart "cavalry" on busy days.

And, I know a golfer who also rides in bicycle races, and works out at the gym. He rides a cart because he sees 18 as golf sport, not a physical conditioning  event.
