Aren't they one in the same now, though?  They're both owned by Disney right?

Yes, but ABC no longer has its own sports programming division; since the NFL's prime-time network game went to NBC several years ago, the network has essentially outsourced sports to ESPN for a nominal fee. ESPN is the one with its name on the contracts, not ABC.

ABC bought Disney which at the time owned ESPN. espn never owned Disney, nor did Disney own ABC.

The Walt Disney company and ESPN are all being run by ABC- they are not autonomic, exclusive or otherwise independent. they are separate business units each attempting to excel in their given market and demographics. ESPN is obviously sports and specialty sports programing i.e.  xgames & sporting news reporting.  Disney obviously does some programing, movies and Disney world, resorts, all licensing etc I believe they also have subsids below them. I thinks a cruise ship company for example.

You do realize that there is no ABC when it comes to sports programming, right? Anything you watch on the network is property of ESPN. Now that ESPN has broadcast rights, every important match is aired live; that's in contrast to when NBC would black out cable and streaming coverage to air the day's marquee match on tape-delay, edited to fit into a two-hour time window, and long after fans already knew the final result. Yes, the live final is now on cable, same as the Open Championship. But weekend mornings are when network affiliates can air local-oriented programming, as well as the network's political talk shows. The affiliates and the network news divisions don't want their schedules to be preempted by a sporting event going on in Europe. NBC, CBS, and Fox all now have cable sports networks of their own, but as of yet, none of them are carried on all service providers' basic package; ESPN, on the other hand, is. Since the majority of American households have cable, ABC and ESPN have decided it makes more sense to air Wimbledon and the Open live on ESPN, not interrupt network affiliate schedules, but continue to rebroadcast coverage during afternoon hours (as ABC and NBC had always done anyway).

I'm a cordcutter, no cable and get my sports via OTA and I realize I'm a minority but from my POV all I see is that Wimbledon isn't live anymore. I don't keep up with the particulars of the business but all I see is major sport events going to cable, the price of cable going up, nickel and diming people, sneaking in extra charges, more commercials, more unwanted graphics covering the screen, more popup ads on the set top box, etc...

    • Thank you.  I'll cross it off the list since it isn't going to achieve what I want.
    • While it does turn out that both Tiger and Phil are less squeaky clean than I previously believed, I don't think golf quite has the worst in professional sports.  Or maybe they're better at image management.   Obviously I'm not fond of Phil's issue we're discussing in this thread (or his involvement with LIV) or Tiger's choices of how to drive.  I used to really like Dustin Johnson and, even before the LIV situation, we started to hear rumors that he bought more snow than Seward, although I don't think those stories were ever substantiated.  Meanwhile, I did think of Anthony Kim as the "good, bad boy" of the tour for a while fifteen years ago because of his party persona -- and if it turns out the worst he did was show up hung over to play (barring what one thinks of LIV), that's pretty good.  And I'm still happy he found a way to get his life clean. If we contrast that with some other sports I enjoy, I'm sure we could find a nice long list of NFL players that, at one point in my life, I was quite fond of, we get far worse disappointments (to put it mildly).
    • Answering that properly would land me in hot water, so I'm not going to. I don't think that many people would do that. I think that in certain circumstances many people would be willing to overlook someone doing that. But I was really referring to what I assumed was Tiger's transgressions (cheating on his wife) not Phil's.
    • No! Is a large part of the human population selfish, apathetic and cuts corners in the name of self-preservation 'more than they would like to admit', yes. Degenerate, scum, etc?.. no!! Most humans/men would not grope a woman like Phil is accused of doing (I think he absolutely did). That is scum. I mean what % of men do you think would do that? Seriously??
    • I don't think that is true at all. That is off-topic here, I think.
