Yes, obviously an 8i from 8i distance will get you closer to and/or on the green vs a 5i from 5i distance.  But the tee shot is part of this equation too.  And the point is that you're a bit more likely to get to 5i distance with a 5i (*and* have a shot at the green *and* not be OB or otherwise in trouble) than you are likely to similarly get to 8i distance with a driver.  I'm just saying you need to consider the tradeoffs.

Again, that's obvious. The point is that 2 poorly hit 5i will likely leave you in better shape than an equally poorly hit driver followed by an equally poorly hit anything.

I agree with the 5i versus 8i distances, but drivers are built so well these days it's really hard to not get at least 150 yards of playable distance with it. A 5 i on the other hand is difficult to get 150 yards of playable distance for a beginner.

The fact that a driver is sitting on the tee box makes it easier to hit.

I was a high handicap less than 1.5 years ago , and the strategy that worked best for me was to hit driver then a 3W or 5W to get 350 yard par 4 distances (yes, that's no typo). A beginner is more apt to be able to hit a wood and hybrid because they can be swung more upright and get a decent result. I always liked the tee box because it is more controlled, panic set in on rough and even fairways.

Irons are simply harder for beginners to hit properly.

I'm not saying everyone is guaranteed to score better by laying up off the tee in every situation. Just saying that IMO there is some validity to at least considering the percentages.  It's different for everyone - for example, unlike you I have never hit 3W or 5W as good as I've hit my irons.

I never said I hit them "good" it's just that a "swing and tap" with woods go further than any iron. By "swing and tap" I mean barely making contact with the ball with "some" kind of swing.

Most new tired golfers end up hitting 8 irons or bigger for distances even around 100 yards. Not everyone can hit a SW 100 yards all the time. We're talking about high handicappers, and not seasoned golfers.

My back was hurting bad but I wanted to work on my short game.  So I went to play a round after work.  I could only swing at 60% and was hitting my drive about 160 yards.  In effect, I was laying up on every hole.  And yet, I had my best score in the last 4 rounds.   My back should never heal :-D .
