I figure, in order for me to beat a lower handicap player in match play, I need to limit my bad scores to come from a few blown up holes.  That's easier said than done for a 21 handicapper.   In fact, it only happens one out of about every 15 rounds.   With 80% handicap tournament, I don't think I have any chance.   At 100% giveaway, I think I have a decent chance to put up a fight.

Until relatively recently in the U.K. it was 3/4 of the handicap difference in singles matchplay. Initially, I, like a lot of others I know thought that going to 100% of the difference was going to be a big disadvantage for lower handicaps but after a bit of reflection and actually thinking about what's happened in genuine matches, it's pretty obvious that (sand baggers excepted and they soon get a reputation), giving 100% of the difference isn't that bad and the evidence actually still suggests that the low player has a slightly better chance than the high handicapper.

At the end of the day, if handicaps are an accurate reflection of the two players, giving 100% difference should be the obvious thing to do in my mind.

Update:

I won my 1st match (got 6 strokes) and lost the 2nd one (got 13 strokes).  In both matches, I played 1 - 2 strokes better than my handicap.  Still, I barely won the 1st match, and lost the 2nd one by 2&1.   B/c both of my opponents were much better player than I am, I lost most holes which I didn't get a stroke.   It was an even match on holes that I got a stroke.   Bottom line, I am convinced that 80% handicap on match play tilts the favor to the lower handicap player.

So in the match when we use "80% off  the difference of lowest HC..."  does that mean subtract the lowest HC in the flight from the highest HC in the flight then give strokes at 80% of that delta?

    • Wow that was disingenuous. Like, let’s ignore that golfers actually rotate. It isn’t all side bend. Has incorrect or excessive side bend hurt golfers sure. In no way are golfers taught to just fling their hips towards the target. To basically claim it’s him versus this evil golf instruction industry is just disingenuous.

    • I'm starting to move with some speed and confidence. Carried the fairway bunker 225 yards out on the 17th yesterday fairly comfortably. I don't think it was a one off drive either. Pretty much back to game speed. On another note it doesn't seem like my pelvis is nearly as thrusty compared to a this time last year. I hope I'm judging that correctly. It's an ongoing battle.
