My driver for the past two years has been a Callaway Diablo Edge, which is 13 degree, 45.5" closed face. I have wanted to experiement with a shorter shaft, but did not want to cut down my regular club. Then I found a broken Adams GT3 in the trash. I put a new shaft in it, and made the length 44". The face is not closed, and its a 9 degree. I hit the Callaway fairly straight, about 50% fairways. I hit the GT3 right, often with a severe slice. Last two rounds I hit 2 fairways combined. Obviously they are very different clubs. But I am not good enough to know what adjustments to make with the GT3. Any thoughts? I just want to see if a shorter shaft will give me more control. Distance is not the objective. Oh, and both clubs are regular flex. Callayway has a Aldila Habanero. I put an Aldila NVS in the Adams.

When you say right,do you mean starts right and curves further right? Or starts straight or left and then curves right?

@peiserma ,

The loft difference alone is going to cause differences in the ball flight.  The Adams will be a lot lower with the same swing and ball position.  Being lower loft, it may exaggerate the off axis spin and curve of the ball.  If you want to keep playing the Adams, try moving the ball position more forward in your stance so you are hitting with a more positive angle of attack.  This will increase launch angle and reduce spin.

@peiserma , you hit your driver fairly straight, 50% fairways? I wouldn't change a thing.

It starts right and either curves gently right, or curves severely right. I will try moving the ball forward and see if that helps. Everything I have read tells me I should not be playing 9d anyway. The whole idea is to see if a shorter shaft might help my accuracy. To billchao: yeah, maybe I should just stick with the 13d

I consider 50% fairways hit pretty accurate. If you start messing with the shaft length, you get involved with the weight, swing weight, etc. Next thing you know, you can't hit the club at all because it doesn't feel right. If you want to change your ballflight, you have to change your swing, not your club.

    • To flog this subject even further, if that's even possible, this article from Golf Monthly just appeared today in one of my news feeds. Written by a golf writer in the UK who I never heard of, he's basically saying that there should be only 3-5 rounds from the most recent 20 that should count towards the average and only competitive rounds should count. He claims the erratic scorers would have less of an advantage than they do now. He makes a lot of references to "club golfers" in the UK being the ones who are mostly dissatisfied. https://share.google/qmZZBEoJvOxHxJGil  In my experience with my league where we have golfers with indexes ranging from 5 to 40, looking at the weekly results from the past two years, I can detect no pattern that would substantiate the claim that the current system gives an unfair advantage to either erratic golfers (aren't we all?) or higher handicappers. Apparently though, at least in the UK, this seems to be "a thing."
