I was reading some stats from the 2007 PGA season and was astonished to see that the longest drive of the year was 437 yards by Brad Wetterich at the Mercedes in Hawaii (he also had the second longest drive). What's crazy is that Davis Love III had one that measured 473 a year or two ago. Now, obviously these are downhill holes, but seriously, how in God's name is this possible? That boggles the mind.

I've heard a lot of the longer drives being on 550 yard par fives (Appleby hit a 400 yard dinger on the 18th at Firestone), but believe it or not, Wetterich flew the green by ten yards on the 427 yard par 4. Yikes.

I've played the Plantation course a few times and it's not un-heard of, the winds gust pretty hard there, fairways roll well and the wholes are very much downhill.

Not too long ago a 17 year old won the long driving contest in Korea at 4xx yards. He is over 6'3" and has a full body swing. I am sure if you have the physique such a thing is possible. I am 5'9" and can drive the ball up to 330 yards (not my average!!) without favorable conditions (just need no wind and flat fairway).

The pros are just that - pros. Their career is golf and they know what to do with their body, ball and club. Sum of the parts must add up.

    • This is a great discussion. Other parts of the course where there are houses have white stakes and signs. This keeps people from trespassing and hitting shots on their property. There is another county road on the east side of the course that does not have white stakes like the hole I described. I checked the score card and there is nothing to indicate these roadways are OB.
    • Day 3: Worked on backswing. Feel: Matt Wolff, Real: Not yanking it inside and getting it laid off and flat at the top.
    • I wrote the post before leaders tee'd off today (3rd round) when Schef was still tied with Fitz at -10. Also, if you read further I also said 'one man' will most probably put the championship to sleep by end of today..😊. Yeah, not much drama left it seems. Scheffler with a hot putter is out right frustrating for the field. I will still watch tomorrow because the course is awesome and the play is pretty exciting in general. Players reaching deep to hang on.
    • Yea, it seems clear that if it isn’t marked or set by the committee it’s in bounds. Now, should you go trespassing to hit a ball. 😉
