A golfer should always hit their next shot off the best lie possible, so with that in mind,  I would think most amateurs should go with the H/9I. Another plus is being able to see the green. An up hill lie, unless it is a practiced shot, can get ugly really quick. Closer is not always better from a scoring stand point.

While nothing is absolute, proximity to the hole is the number one factor for lower scores. I heard someone say that once, I think it's part of a book too :-P

I know that hole. It's kind of a stupid hole, really. The layup is the proper play there but because of how tight and constricted it gets. Unless the lies are awkward as heck in the valley, I'd get down to the valley and hit from there. The 12th at Kahkwa is similar (second shot on a par five).

I thought you might since you're from Erie. Yea, I don't like the hole really either. BTW, I meant to say hit the ball180-200 off the tee then wedge it into the green. In a scramble, if one of my partners had layed up properly, I'd bomb away. Normally there is too much trouble to warrant driver or any wood on that hole. I really like the course though. Love number 4, that little par 3 with the elevated tee. You have to avoid the high risk shot unless you're forced to (ie to try to prevent losing a match), especially if the reward is not that great (70 yard pitch versus 9 or PW full shot).

    • Day 22 (23 May 24) / played the weekly nine-hole semi-scramble with the guys.  Solid play - primary focus was on making solid contact with the irons.
    • Day 41: Pitching/chipping into the net. A few full swings with driver hitting Almost Golf balls.
    • Day 568, May 23, 2024 Loooooooong day today. Got some shadow work done with an umbrella.
    • Day 148: 5/23/24 Hit balls on the range measuring ball speed for each club. Recently watched a fitting video where the fitter said he targeted 5 mph ball speed increase for each club.  Mine weren’t quite there. 4 and 5 mph were pretty similar except for 1 ball. Big jump for hybrid, bigger jump for 4-hybrid, and huge change for driver. Swung for the fences with driver and hit them all pretty straight at the end of my session. Several at 111 mph, which is above my normal speed. Finished with chipping release 1 with several clubs.  Good session!
    • Birdied 15 at my home course today and made a birdie the other day at a course I don’t usually play. Will update the spreadsheet once I’m home on my computer.
