My Swing (Grndslmhttr3)

15 posts in this topic

I've been Playing Golf for: 7 years

My current handicap index or average score is: 9.4

My typical ball flight is: pull fade

The shot I hate or the "miss" I'm trying to reduce/eliminate is: pull fade

Videos: It started to get a little stormy, so I was only able to get DTL videos of my driver and 6-iron before the lightning detectors started going off. I suck with cameras, so the quality is a tad blurry, but it should be good enough. Check out those awful impact positions.

As an aside, I actually managed to hit a few baby push draws here and there, which was encouraging. Nothing spectacular but it was an improvement.

Head moves up and away on the backswing, hands also work away from the body. Then the arms lift and the club gets laid off leading to a few compensations on the downswing.

Part of what is causing the takeaway issues is your balance at address. You're kind of leaning forward, typically like to see the arms hanging away from the player slightly, yours is the opposite. It looks like if I was to gently push you from behind you would fall forward.

I would recommend raising the handle (point the butt of the club to your belt buckle) and standing a little taller. I'm not saying to stand with a "straighter" back, just not bend over as much. This thread should help

It's going to feel very awkward at first but this will help you get more balanced at address...

So you can give yourself a chance to make a takeaway with less "complicated" moves.

I'm not sure where I got 7 years from; started freshman year of high school and just finished college so 8 would be a bit more accurate, not that it matters. Anyway, got out for 9 earlier today. Played pretty well, standing more upright and holding the club a bit more upright did feel awkward on the takeaway but I should be get should get used to it quickly enough.

I got out to the range today for about half an hour. I was hitting the ball with a slight push-draw a lot more today (not totally consistent, but Rome wasn't built in a day!). A lot of my misses were just straight pushes but weren't too bad. I still have to focus on raising the butt of the club so it points to my belt; I noticed that on occasion I was bent forward too much with the arms hanging inward. I also think I'm not getting a full shoulder turn (probably like 75-80 degrees; not quite 90); I'm trying not to focus on too many things at once, although it can be quite hard not to! I think I'm going out for 18 tomorrow, so we'll see what happens.

Are you sure? ;-)

I can barely see you!

No matter how hard I try to maintain posture through impact, I still end up "standing up." I'm coming over the top, too, so I'm guessing those are connected in some way, and I have no idea where to start in terms of fixing it.

Your shoulders are very flat, hips flat, etc. So you throw the shaft and arms out a little bit in transition.

I went to the range today and worked on getting a steeper shoulder turn. After a while it started to feel a bit more natural and my shots were looking better, but I needed to make a conscious effort to steepen my shoulders. Then again, correcting a 11- or 12-year-old swing fault (or however long I've been playing this damn game) to the point where it feels natural isn't going to happen overnight, I guess.

I'll probably post a video tonight or tomorrow; I'm not at my computer right now.

Got back about half an hour ago, but in the time between these posts, my phone randomly got stuck in a bootloop and it doesn't seem like something I can fix :-(

Got my phone replaced, so here's a video from earlier this evening. I'm trying to get a steeper shoulder turn (I probably should keep the clubs I use in these swing videos consistent, oops), but it doesn't look like I'm actually much steeper with the irons than before. I was hitting a lot of shots off the upper part of the toe with the driver, but I hit a lot of nice iron shots. Due to my inability to properly position the camera, the iron video looks like I'm aiming way more right than I actually am.

I couldn't edit again (waited too long, I guess), but what causes the early extension?

A few things.

  • Desire to hit it farther.
  • Shaft stands up, and goat humping can shallow it.
  • Other things.

I'll try to get a video up at some point this week. I've been hitting the ball farther than I've ever hit it before, and it doesn't even feel like I'm trying to. Not sure if it's from better fitness or an improvement in mechanics, but I'm guessing it's a combination of the two. Either way, I'm not complaining.
