One of my bad habits is not having a solid follow through with irons. I catch myself swinging and hitting the ball good but on my follow through I can never seem to finish high I always want to cut the follow through short and almost chicken wing it. My right hand finishes knuckles down and instead turning high and above my left shoulder I almost cut it off low and under my left shoulder. I normally play a draw but when I start hitting bad shots its a weak push/fade, and I notice I have that cut off follow through. I do not do this with a driver and normally play a straight to a small draw with driver. Anyone have any tips to help me finish high with arms extended for a good follow through?

Having a short followthrough, with the arms extended, isn't necessarily a bad thing, can actually help your draw the ball. You typically see tour players have a much shorter followthrough with their mid/short irons compared to their driver. If you are chicken winging it, I would check out this video.

maybe I just need to make sure my right hand rolls over then. Like I said good day im drawing it ..bad day its a weak push/fade. Thanks for the video as well!

That could actually bring more fades into play. The more you try and roll the hands forearms, not only does the face start pointing more left but the path also shifts across the ball. We find more success with players feeling the opposite, feeling the arms stretch out, rolling the face less, this can actually help the path be more outward.

So after I have made contact should I try and feel my arms extended out? almost kind of chasing the ball?

Yeah similar to this

Not having a solid follow through usually has to do with not having a correct release. The proper way to release the golf club is with your pivot and the centrifugal force it creates. When you are swinging down and starting with your hips and lower body, you are creating acceleration that will then be transferred into your shoulders and then your arms. One body part fires after another. If your arms and wrists are relaxed and being pulled by your pivot they will release automatically.

Your rear wrist and elbow will straighten through impact and then your rear arm will roll over your front arm up into the finish.

Try the impact pre-set drill to get a better impact position: Simply set up to the ball with a normal address position and then forward press your hands so the shaft leans forward, open your hips to the target and lift your rear heel off of the ground. Make sure to keep your head behind the ball. A common mistake is for golfers to lunge forward with their head passed the ball as they try to turn their hips and shift their weight. Start your golf swing from this impact position. Be sure to plant your rear heel on the way up to make a normal backswing and then turn your body back into proper impact alignments as fast as you can. Practice this with all of your clubs to learn correct impact alignments.

The benefits of practicing perfect impact alignments is to get your club face squarely on the back of the ball. Having the proper wieght shift and body alignments will bring your hands to the ball before the club head with a forward leaning shaft. This will result in a de-lofted club face and pressure going down into the golf ball adding an increase in distance, spin and control.

Don't you think there's a bit more to impact than those three things?

How about…

This is a good thread, I have this same problem.  Every once in a while I feel like I'm jumping off the ground on the follow through and I assumed I was doing something wrong for that to happen.  Ha  Gonna check out that slide thread too, I think I'm not really sliding anything at all and that's probably bad.

    • I've played Bali Hai, Bear's Best and Painted Desert. I enjoyed Bali Hai the most--course was in great shape, friendly staff and got paired in a great group. Bear's Best greens were very fast, didn't hold the ball well (I normally have enough spin to stop the ball after 1-2 hops).  The sand was different on many holes. Some were even dark sand (recreation of holes from Hawaii). Unfortunately I was single and paired with a local "member" who only played the front 9.  We were stuck behind a slow 4-some who wouldn't let me through even when the local left. Painted Desert was decent, just a bit far from the Strip where we were staying.

    • Honestly, unless there's something about that rough there that makes it abnormally penal or a lost ball likely, this might be the play. I don't know how the mystrategy cone works, but per LSW, you don't use every shot for your shot zones. In that scatter plot, you have no balls in the bunker, and 1 in the penalty area. The median outcome seems to be a 50 yard pitch. Even if you aren't great from 50 yards, you're better off there than in a fairway bunker or the penalty area on the right of the fairway. It could also be a strategy you keep in your back pocket if you need to make up ground. Maybe this is a higher average score with driver, but better chance at a birdie. Maybe you are hitting your driver well and feel comfortable with letting one rip.  I get not wanting to wait and not wanting to endanger people on the tee, but in a tournament, I think I value playing for score more than waiting. I don't value that over hurting people, but you can always yell fore 😆 Only thing I would say is I'm not sure whether that cone is the best representation of the strategy (see my comment above about LSW's shot zones). To me, it looks like a 4 iron where you're aiming closer to the bunker might be the play. You have a lot of shots out to the right and only a few to the left. Obviously, I don't know where you are aiming (and this is a limitation of MyStrategy), but it seems like most of your 4 iron shots are right. You have 2 in the bunker but aiming a bit closer to the bunker won't bring more of your shots into the bunker. It does bring a few away from the penalty area on the right.  This could also depend on how severe the penalties are for missing the green. Do you need to be closer to avoid issues around the green?  It's not a bad strategy to hit 6 iron off the tee, be in the fairway, and have 150ish in. I'm probably overthinking this.
