Shindig: By your comment about the goldem compass, I imagine you've read the books?

From all the people that have read the books and seen the movie, I've heard quite alot of bad things. I'd like to hear your opinion on it.

The very good:
  • Bourne Ultimatum - these are the best action flicks. Period. None compare.
  • Ratatoullie - A very, very good film. Yes, it's a film - not a cartoon.
  • 300 - I loved it. A bit over the top with the blood, but hey, what did you expect given you knew what was going to happen going into the film?
  • Superbad - Laughed my ass off. "McLovin? What are you? An Irish R&B; singer?"

The good
  • Knocked Up - Good but not great.
  • Spiderman 3 - I like the series but this wasn't in the class of the first couple...especially the first. Only a few series movies can hold up. Bourne is the only really recent one to do so.
  • Hot Fuzz - Not nearly as good as Shaun of the Dead, but I love these guys. Good for a few laughs. Watch it with subtitles though...otherwise you'll miss a LOT of subtle humor.

The bad
  • Pirates of the Carribean - Ugh. Where do I begin? I loved the first, but this one was terrible. The writing and acting (except for Depp) was pitiful. Plot was dumb too.
  • Transformers - This one had me up until the point where they went to the kids house. After that it got corny and bad. It was dissapointing because I was a huge fan of the original cartoons and grew up owning Megatron, Ratchet and a bunch of other Transformers. I guess this is exactly what you would expect from Michael Bay. All glitz and bang and no substance.

The "I want to see"
  • Michael Clayton - I'm not necessarly a Clooney fan, but this looks good.
  • 3:10 to Yuma - I love Crowe. He's probably the most versatile actor out there now and isn't afraid to do just about anything. It doesn't help to have Christian Bale as well.
  • American Gangster - same can be said for Denzel as well.
  • Atonement - I can stand a flick like that every once in a while...especially if Keira Knightingly is in it. Of course she was terrible in Pirates 3...but I blame that on the plot and writing.
  • I am legend - looks good enough as well. Some people I know have read the book and didn't love it, but said it was good enought to rent and enjoy.

The "I don't want to see"
  • Die Hard 4.0 - Sorry Bruce. 1 and 2 were good, but I lost you after that. This one looks really, really bad.

That's all I can think of now. Hammer me if you want, but that's my 2 cents.

Fairways and Greens.

Dave

Shindig: By your comment about the goldem compass, I imagine you've read the books?

I re-read the first book last summer, but otherwise I hadn't read - or even really thought about - the books in a while, up until the movie's announcement. I enjoyed them immensely, but there aren't many books that I read more than a few times. I enjoyed the movie, and I hear some people who saw the movie first are picking up the books and reading them.

I've long since accepted that a movie will be different from a book, so I go for whether I enjoy the movie as a "related entity." Do I get some enjoyment out of the movie? Will others enjoy it and possibly understand why I liked the book? Will others be encouraged to read the book, having seen the movie? Did my favorite pieces from the book get imagined nicely onto the screen? If so, the movie based on the book is a success. Otherwise, I'll try to enjoy the movie in its own right, independent of the book. Some movies I'll hold to a high standard of similarity: I'll be disappointed if the next two Sin City movies don't follow the books closely, after how closely the first one did. By contrast, there are movies I expect almost nothing from in terms of similarity: I enjoyed A Quantum of Solace , and I'm sure I'll love the movie later this year, but if they're similar, I'll be very surprised. But for most movies, I don't try to compare and contrast how similar to the books they are, largely because I know I'd be disappointed if I held that as my standard for enjoyment. I think the movies that best exemplify an appropriate trade-off in the book-to-movie accuracy-vs-practicality conversion are Big Trouble (2002) and Casino Royale (2006).

err um other than NC, and Shindig some of the movies mentioned were on the rather dull side. Everyone has different taste but you cant say 300, or die hard 4.0 were the best movies made in terms of plot, acting, directing and so on.. they were pure action flick's.. while entertaining they werent anywhere near the best of 07.

in order..

4. Sunshine *
5. Cloverfield *

No one else liked "Chuck and Larry"? That movie was great. Adam Sandler and Kevin James are both very funny and Jessica Beal in her bra and panties. The only other movie I seen in theatres in 07 was "Catch and Release" and it was ok for a chick flick.

I forgot C&L; was 2007. It was funny; I saw it on DVD with my sister over Xmas break. I don't know if I'd see it again, but I did enjoy seeing it.

The movie I forgot to mention that was better the second time was War . The first time, it seemed like a 100 minute action movie with very little plot. Towards the end, I realized what the plot was. The second time through, it was great - a great action movie with an interesting (although somewhat hidden) plot.

I agree with your oppinion on "War". I was somewhat bored for while.. feeling like it wasnt going anywhere and then the twist at the end was actually some what original and unexpected. Kind of refreshing to see in an action flick, although i wouldnt have it anywhere near the best of 2007, id recommend it to Jet Li fans.

Sadly I can say the last movie I saw in the theater was Talledega Nights. The crazy thing is I always saw at least one to two movies every week for years. Summer of 1993 my wife was the manager of a local theater that had 12 screens. I literally saw every movie that came out that year. Including going to special pre-release showings of all the big Summer Blockbusters that year. It's just not high on my list of ways to spend my free time. I have two kids that have things going almost every night of the week. My wife is not a big fan of going to the movies.

There have been a few in the last two years I wanted to see but just didn't make the time to go. It's also hard to justify the cost. For what I spend on two tickets and crap at the snack bar, I can buy the DVD when it comes out in a few months and have $30 bucks left over for Thai food and a good six pack.

I do end up seeing a lot of the good stuff on DVD. I also have all the movie channels free from DirecTV for the next 6 months. We have a 65" Mitsubishi Wide Screen with a good surround sound set up. It's not quite the same, but a solid substitute.

Of course I also end up buying a lot of movies that I have yet to watch:

So, SO VERY true. My wife and I almost completely refuse to see anything but a matinee show... and it is still $7.50 a ticket. We also refuse to buy movie food... can't justify $10.00 for popcorn and a soda. That being said we usually see a couple movies each month. Whatever I miss I get from Blockbuster Online (mail... like netflix).

I know 'There will be blood' was 2007 because i saw it in December. Cloverfield wasnt but i had to put it in there because of its originality. I loved it, Felt like i hadnt seen anything like it. Thats my oppinnion and i know alot of critics felt the same way.

Best movie? There Will Be Blood Daniel Day-Lewis is off the charts. Best performance by an actor as far back as I can remember -- and trust me I go way, way, back.

I saw the last hour of no country for old men, and personally I thought it was terrible, didn't make any sense, and seemed to have no substantial plot, but that's just a 15 year old talking . My top 10...hmmm...I would have to say:

1. Bourne Ultimatum
2. The Simpsons Movie (love the Simpsons)
3. I Am Legend, thought it was amazing!
4. Chuck and Larry was funny
5. Harry Potter
6. American Gangster
7. The Great Debaters (I think it was '07?)
8. Ratatouille
9. Superbad
10. 300

Here's what I play:
