I guess it depends on how you define a course of "any length". If there are 460 yard par-4's, the course is likely pushing 7,000 yards and is waaaay too long for most of us, regardless of how long we think we are off the tee.

I hope the OP is smart enough to stay away from 7,000 yard tees/courses. Pick the right tees for his game, and I agree, an accurate 3-wood will likely to be a lot more effective, and fun!

This. I hit 7,200 yards the other week and my score reflected it. lol

I've only played 7000 yards a few times. Most courses won't even play that long from the tips. 6600 yards could have several 400+ par fours. Even 400 yard par fours are a real challenge with a 3 wood. If I hit a good 3 wood, I'm still 160 out. As another thread indicated, how many times do people hit the green from 150? It pays to work on getting your driver in play. If it's too tough, maybe the 3 wood is your answer. Hitting the big dog is more fun. I played my "new" driver with the new shaft last night in league. During warm up, I was hitting a small fade. Normally I hit a draw, but it was squirrely last night. Really liked the fade off the tee. I hit it long and with confidence.

A par 4 400 yard is a kind of stretching for the 3w. I agree that it would be kin dof wishfull thinking that I could hit the green. Given my hcp, I tend to play it like a par 5. Hit a quit i6 or something to get near the green. A trustfull chip and 2 puts. And that strategy worked well in my last competition game. I got 37 points, 89 strokes.

But I agree, there is nothing like a big whoomp from the big dog.

Played yesterday on a exclusieve course near Amsterdam. Put the big dog in play. No worries. Near the lowest score to win. And I did. Won the competition. Always nice!:-D
