Has anyone else done the box drill? You literally put a box less then an inch from the outside of the ball and swing. This has done wonders for my swing. Does anyone know what its training my body to do? My instructor had me do it in reaction to hitting the ball too close to the heel of the club....

I got a brief case of the shanks that was cured by doing the same with a ball instead of a box.  I think it just forces you to change your path to make contact on the center of the face.

About 5 minutes.

Really.  I had probably 3 or 4 rounds where I'd shank the ball 3-4 times a round.  One of the evolvr guys suggested it and I immediately--as in the first swing with the second ball there--starting getting better contact.  I did it for a few minutes then took the ball away and I was fine.  I probably did for a few minutes before my next round too, just to be safe, but haven't done it since.

It's a pain dragging that box around the course all the time. :)

It's one of the best drills there is.  The only way it "fixes" anything is for you to notice what you "feel" you are doing to avoid the box.  Do you feel you rotate your hips more?  Do you feel you swing more down the line?  This is how the drill will help you beyond just a quick range fix.  I've actually played a round pretending the box was still there and it worked.

If you hate hauling the box around to the range, you can just put the little ball tray next to the mat next to your ball.  I turn it around so the high side is closest to my ball.  Laying down a head cover might work too.  I've never tried that one.

This is what I currently do, what's this drill exactly?

Hawk,

I tried the thing at the range you talk about and its made out of iron and I hit it once and dinged up my club :). I agree with you it works at the range. The challenge is to be able to do it when its not there obviously. I just started doing it(and it works) but was wondering what you do on the course. Good to hear you just imagine its there. I assume after using the box for 1000s of balls it becomes easier to do without it....

I placed a second ball just outside the toe of the club and the first in the center of the club face. So You can't hit the hosel without hitting the second ball. You won't want to hit the second ball and will alter your swing path to adjust.

Seems like a good drill, I'll store it away for later. Thanks. :-)

    • Day 185 - 2025-04-03 Had a good 2.5 hour session at Golf Evolution. Kinda glad it was still wet and windy out today as I wouldn't have gotten such a good session in if I played. Got up to 93 MPH (with a pause) on my 6I and 130 MPH ball speed (on a different slightly slower hit, a bit more de-lofted than I'll want eventually).
    • I'm highly probable for the entire weekend, thanks for doing the hard work to set it up.  I can't wait for more details.
    • I take 2nd, is a confirmation that you can eventually win your major and also is good material for having a laugh about it in the distant future.
    • I'm a relatively new golfer (<5 years) in my mid-thirties. So far I've spent most of my time and money on lessons and actually golfing. I'm currently a 90s-100s player, but hope to break into the 80s with lessons and practice. I'm definitely not of the mindset that flashy expensive clubs will help me play better...I try to make the assumption that my equipment is more capable than I am. That said, I do know that realistically that threshold does exist somewhere. I just have no idea where. At what point should I consider an upgrade from starter clubs to something I can grow into and improve with?  My stuff: Starter set (Callaway Strata) from Amazon. (3w, 5h, 9i-PW) Gently used Cleveland Wedges (LW, SW, GW) - My old ones were from a set from the late 90s, so I did upgrade these. Gently used TaylorMade M1 driver - The starter set driver had a regular flex, and I had several knowledgeable people tell me I should have a stiff flex Thanks in advance!
    • Looking forward to this movie, it checks all the boxes for me. Indie Movie True Story Cast is all great character actors Walton Goggins! No Whammies!!!!!!!!!
