Hello,

I have played golf on and off my whole life, and seriously now for about 3 years. I have just gotten interested in handicaps this past season, and have inputted my scores into an app on my phone, just the total score overall.

I heard about the "net double bogey" rule in handicaps, but i don't know what it means. Since I have put in numerous strokes into the app that were above double bogey, did this negatively impact my handicap?

I score on average about a 94 with an 69.8 rating and a 127 slope and the app says I have a 20.6 handicap.

Any clarification on this would be great!

Thanks!

There is no *net double bogey rule*

For ESC purposes (explanations for this are all over the site), the highest score you can post on a hole on your course is an 8 (whether it is a par 3.4 or 5)

your index looks about right from the stats you give.

As @meenman indicated, Equitable Stroke Control (esc) limits the maximum score that you can post on any single hole.  That score is determined by your course handicap for the course and tees that you're playing that day, and can vary from course to course, or as your handicap index varies up or down, especially for someone like you whose index is very close to a threshold.

Here's the chart.  For the most part, you're looking at an 8 as the highest you can post on any given hole right now.  Realize that has NOTHING to do with your score for the round, but is only relevant for posting your score for handicap reporting purposes.

Congratulations on getting serious about maintaining a handicap.  I'd further recommend that you look into establishing an official handicap.....usually very easily done through your state golf association for a very modest ($30ish) annual fee.

Establishing an official handicap this year made me a better golfer. It kept me honest. I also joined a league so that didn't hurt matters either.

    • Yeah, I think I misread that part. I read "in front of" and kinda skipped the rest.
    • We just completed our winter league (Jan 1 - April 30)  Our scoring was simple.  We used the 18 birdies app.  You get 1 point for every member of the league you beat head to head in an 18 hole round (no handicap).  You also get a point for completing the round.  Therefore 4 members play a round- winner of the round gets 4 points, runner-up gets 3, third gets 2, and last gets 1.  Points accumulate throughout the season.  You can play as many times as you want. Our winner accumulated 110 points while second was 102 and third was 97.  We had a total of 16 members in the league.  No issues whatsoever.  All about fun.
