The Power of High-Leverage Practice

Quote:

High-leverage practice shares a few common characteristics:

  • 1) It’s focused. You aren’t pre-creating the entire game, but only targeted situations.
  • 2) It’s often untraditional. It doesn’t tend to fall into the list of conventional practice techniques, and as such, is easy to marginalize or overlook.
  • 3) It’s habitual. High-leverage skills aren’t built in a few specialized sessions; they are built over time, through repetition and routine.

4 WAYS TO USE THE COURSE TO FACILITATE DEEPER LEARNING

4 WAYS TO USE THE COURSE TO FACILITATE DEEPER LEARNING

Golf is one of the only games practiced in an environment that the player will never perform in.  Baseball? Practiced on a diamond.  Hockey?  On a rink.  Tennis? On a court.  Golf? A driving range.  This puts golf coaches at a distinct disadvantage.  We are coaching based on an incomplete picture of how the student actually performs. There are some essential components of performance that we remain ignorant to if we never see the player on the course.

Kill slow play. Allow walking. Reduce ineffective golf instruction. Use environmentally friendly course maintenance.

I like this. Aligns with the 5S thread on effective practice ( ) and many of the games and things included in LSW, in our practice with students, etc.

By and large, people flat out suck at practicing golf.

Completely agree with the last statement. About 98 % of the guys I see at the range, just beat balls, and about oh..10 to 15 %, are out there to show how far they can, or cannot hit driver, which is sometimes comedy at it's best. Last night I was doing a couple of drills, that Mike prescribed to me last May, and the look on one guys face totally puzzled me. His look in my mind kept saying, why are wasting balls, taking 1/2 shots and hitting your 8i about 65 to 70 yds..After about the 10th ball or so, I looked at him and smiled, and said to him, give it a try, keeping in mind I topped the first 2 balls. To me, doing these drills are money well spent on range balls, because after I do the drills, my ball striking always seems to get better.
