After I started seriously playing golf the summer before my freshman year of high school it only took me a little over a year to do it. I wouldn't really call that fair though since I had been golfing for 10 years prior to that, but just messing around the whole time. So it either took me a year, or eleven depending on how you look at it.

Doing it in a tournament was harder and took me two years, before I shot my first even even par 9 holes on the back nine to shoot 76 and tie for 6th the summer before my junior year. I only this year started putting nearly all my tournament scores in the 70's.

I honestly can't remember the first time I broke 80, but it had to be 15 years after I took up the game "seriously".  I played in high school, stopped while I was in college and first married and starting a family.  Picked it back up when I was in my late 20's and have been playing regularly for the last 30 years.  I probably broke 80 twice when I was under 50, after turning 50 (still playing for the same tees) I've broken 80 at least a dozen times, with a personal best of 73 last year.

It took me almost four years and 90-100 rounds. I had a handful of 80s and finally broke through with a 77 at Ewa Beach Golf Club in Oahu last December. I've been shooting 78-84 this year and just established a new low of 76 at Bandon Dunes last month. The weird thing is that I didn't card a single birdie either round.

Yes, I can relate.  I broke 80 the very first time I played golf 'seriously'.

It's true that I had been playing for 2 years, but I don't see why those years should count.  Heck....I was just having fun and screwing around those first 2 years.  HEH

I mean that I would play once a month and look forwards to the Twix bar at the end of the round more than actually playing golf, when I say not playing seriously. I would say it doesn't really count, but others may have a different view (which is completely fine, it's a matter of opinion).

    • Day 120 - Played 18; much better than yesterday. Miss right now is off the heel of the club, so I need to sort that out.
    • Today we played Pease Golf Course in Portsmouth, NH. Course was in great shape but my game didn't show up. I will say I pitched and chipped fairly well but almost everything else was very hit or miss. Cost myself a lot hitting an in play drive with pulling my approach shots maybe 85% of the time. Finally figured out I had been swaying most of the round. Only took me until 13 to figure it out. Used what felt like a much more centered turn and the ballstriking improved. 18 tomorrow using a 2 man scramble format. Just looking to contribute. Been a blast though.
    • Day 22: Hit balls with 7-iron using mevo+ to track dispersion. Was out for a long time after work; 86 balls but the first 50+ were 50% swings focusing on top of backswing feel and then just hitting the ball as a psychic reward. Finished with 20 balls close to full speed. Pretty happy with dispersion and also no horrendous misses. I’m chunking my priority piece out into two separate feels, first and more important is the position/balance at top of backswing which is what I was working on. Once I have that engrained I’ll move to transition part.
    • FWIW I never really had issues with the previous generation of Snells. But… I'm not sure I played them a ton, either.
    • I know Dean Snell designed the original Pro V along with a couple of other brands tour balls.  How exactly does the Snell ball have problems.  Did he change something in the design or is a manufacturing error since he cannot afford the unlimited R&D budgets of the big manufacturers to iron out flaws
