Ok, so earlier today, I got some an email that wasn't exactly what I wanted to find out about, but I guess I'll roll with the punches and play my heart out in every tournament imaginable.

Dear ******,

Thank you so much for your e-mail and especially for your interest in Baylor. You are a very good player, and an excellent student as well. I have no doubt that you will have a very successful college golf career. Unfortunately, I have already signed four players for next fall, and have no more positions available on the squad. Since my team will be very large next year (probably 13 players), I have decided to turn my recruiting focus to the Class of 2016 and beyond. In fact, I also have one verbal commitment from 2016, and have had over a dozen other young men visit our campus. I should be completing that Class sometime this spring.

I know this is not the news you want to hear, however, it is the reality of my situation as it stands. I hope you can understand, and I want to wish you the very best in your search for a place to play and study.

Sincerely,

Coach McGraw

So we'll see what galena from here on out, but for now, it's not looking too great, hopefully I can put on a performance for him that he just can't deny...

That is unfortunate to hear.  Is Baylor your #1 choice of schools?  what about your #2 or #3 schools?  How important is playing golf vs. the education you expect to get out of Baylor?

I think you will need to really weigh your choices before making a decision that you might regret.. i.e. going to another school to play golf to the detriment of the education you might get, or going to Baylor and not playing golf because of the circumstances and not being fully satisfied with the decision you made even though you are getting a great education.  In the end these are the choices we all make in life.

I decided to go to a school so that I could wrestle in it, and I regret doing it to be honest with you because I would have been better off going to another school to play soccer (which I was already recruited for), but my heart was attached to wrestling for some strange reason.  I don't regret anything now, but the things that could have been always creep into ones mind.

It sounds to me like Coach McGraw already has his mind made up, so convincing him otherwise is not going to be easy.. (i'm not saying it is impossible) but give yourself as many options as possible, there is nothing wrong with that.

There are a lot of other schools out there to choose from.  Don't be stuck on Baylor, just based on whatever your criteria for college is.  Lots of D2 and D3 schools that would probably offer you a scholarship where you would actually be on the team and playing in matches.

Sounds like he is all committed to his current team, 13 is sure a lot. For the better D1 programs, could be that happens more often than not these days. And besides, you'd rather be an engineer from Baylor than to have played at Podunk U instead, right?

But hey, you still have all your scholarships to Baylor, and no reason not to keep playing all the tournaments you can and keep getting better. Maybe you can beat some of the players on the team in some local tournaments if they enter them, or you play really well in the state am or something. Scholarships (and spots) aren't always permanent things. Maybe next year things can open up if you play visibly well and the spots open up.

Keep your head up, you are still better than scratch and you are still going to Baylor. That's all very very impressive :-)

Ok, so I've come to the conclusion that even though I've talked so highly about Baylor, I've decided not to go to Baylor, nor because of golf, but because of the fact that is rather go to Texas Tech University and pay 5 times less to get just as good of an education. Frankly, my family and I live near Tech and it would be much easier on us. Therefore, I wish that I could change the title of this thread to 'Journey to becoming a Red Raider.' I have tackled to a friend's who had talked to Coach Sands at Texas Tech and he said that if you qualify for the match play rounds in the US Amateur, or qualify for the US Open, you get an automatic spot, so that will be my goal for this upcoming year. To qualify for either or both of those.

Why not just close this chapter and start a new thread?

ok, so then I shall now start a new thread that I will deam as "How about TTU?" I have some new info from Coach Greg Sands at Texas Tech that is absolutely exciting. So y'all go check out my new thread, hopefully this one will be a little better.

So, after searching for a while, "not so extensively, I might add" I finally found Coach Greg Sands' email, and I contacted him about potentially walking on due to the fact that I haven't produced any results that would truly catch anybody's eyes. He emailed me back today, and frankly, while it may not be much, it's something. So he emailed me back saying that while his roster is full, to keep him updated on my results in case a person drops from the team. He also said that if I was playing in a tournament soon to let him know so that either him or one of his assistant coaches could come watch me while I'm playing in said tournament. So I told him of two of the tournaments that I am playing in this semester, one of them being at Texas Tech's home course, therefore not only is it easy for one of them to make it, but since they are hosting one of the NCAA Regionals there, the course is playing much more difficult than usual, therefore adding interest if I were to play exceptionally well there. That tournament seemed to interest him a little bit, so he might come and watch me play! Needless to say, I'm bouncing off of the walls just from what he said, and I guess that we shall see what he says from here, and hopefully it's only good news from here on out.

Good luck! Don't get all worked up about the tournament. Prepare like you normally would and play your game. Let us know how you do! Also, how about picking an avatar?

Atleast he didn't lead you on and was very up front, like you said I know it's not what you wanted to hear. Send an email to Brandt Kieschnick at Sam Houston St. Me and him

played the mini tours togeather, he's a good guy and he's doing some great things with that program.

Best of luck.  It is a tough path but you seem to be doing all the right things to give yourself the best possible chance.

But then again, what the hell do I know?

    • It may not have been block practice, though, is one of the main points here. You may have been serving and from the same place, but you were likely trying to do slightly different things. It seems that would only be blocked practice if you were trying to hit the same exact ball hit to you to the same exact place in the far court. I'm not sure that's as random as if the ball that you're given to hit is at different places, too, but again…
    • I played tennis in college. I thought block practice was great for serves because you were starting the point and  you could easily adjust where you wanted to place the ball based off the same motion. I equate those to tee balls. I despised block practice for groundstrokes once you reached a certain level and your fundamentals were good. To me, hitting a 100 crosscourt backhands in a row was silly because I would never do that in a match. I needed to randomize it by hitting some deep, some angled, all with different speeds and spins. I share that same thought about iron play. Because we seldom hit the same approach shots hole after hole, I prefer to practice irons randomly.
