Weird, but I think Tiger's swing is very un-model-able (word??). That squat and fire move he does, very hard to do reliably, I think.

Freddie's tempo is just so silky, yet so powerful, but he has an odd plane.

Ernie wins it for me, such a simple swing, no wasted motion, great lines and tempo.

Nothing in the swing is done at the expense of balance.

Freddie Couples....silky smooth.

Of the young guns, I like Adam Scott and Charles Howell III. Those guys are LIMBER!! Waiting for them to win some majors!

Thinking about a beautiful swing made me think about a golfer who's on the Senior Tour now. Back in the 70's & 80's, Tom Purtzer was always known for having one of the best, if not the best swings on tour. But if you look at his record, he never was considered a top player.

It reminded me how just having a good swing is not enough. I remember one of the guys on my college golf team had what I considered the best swing on the team. But he could hardly break 80, which left him home on tournament days.

It's amazing how if you look at some of the great players (Palmer, Trevino, Player, and even Nicklaus with his left heel coming high off the ground) their swings were not perfect. But they perfected what they had.

Fred Couples bar none. Even though he swings flat footed (hence his back problems) he still has the best swing.
Ernie Els in a close second.

He takes a shorter than normal backwing, but then snaps thruough the shot with alot of speed.

Question: Ernie Els and Tiger Woods both consistently drive the ball maybe 290-300+, yet Els' swing looks so languid and a lot slower when compared to Woods, who has (or appear to have) a really fast, whippy swing??

Howcome?

I remember seeing Els in one of those Monday night made for tv cash grabs-the put all four players on a swing speed monitor and Els' was right up there with the other players-sure Woods is higher but not significantly

Amazing - Els looks like he's hardly putting any effort in at all.

(Overall) Tiger Woods - I think he is so on plane he can work the ball any direction he wants. He's like the human Taylormade R7 superquad, instead of changing clubhead weights he uses his mind and body.

(Irons) Luke Donald - So compact and controlled finish. Irons are off the charts good.

(Driver) Freddy Couples - Rhythm, did I mention his rhythm? Also distance.

(Putter) David Toms - Putting Stroke (Doesn't even look like he hits a ball)

(Wildcard) Aaron Baddeley - Stack and Tilt (Because thats the swing I'm using now and love it!)

Swing = Stacked and On Plane when possible.

Lots of people like Ernie's but his driver is somewhat unreliable by (tour standards). I think his early uncocking of the wrists at the top creates a consistency problem for him. It's almost like he starts his downswing by uncocking his wrists a little bit. It seems like this in turn has cost him some consistency at impact. His rhythm is silky smooth though. Helps when you're as tall as him, club looks like it's in slo motion.

The TV guys always like Steve Elkington's swing. Quite often when he's playing they'll always comment about best swing on tour yadda yadda.

I agree with the comment in this thread about having the good swing but not finishing. So much emphasis on long game in golf, so little on short game and putting. How many times have you left the course and remembered a solid 2 putt or a good chip? Way more it's "Wow can that guy drive the ball etc etc." You don't even hear much "Great iron player"

Swing = Stacked and On Plane when possible.
