Hello.

Here's my story. I'm 15 years old and I usually shoot mid to low nineties. I'm pretty inconsistent and this is my main problem. I always have trouble hitting my driver well/straight, but when I do I usually hit it about 250-275 yards. I hit my 7 iron 150, if that matters.

All I want to do is get better. I'm likely going to buy myself almost a whole entire new set of clubs with the exception of my hybrid. (which is the only club in my bag I hit consistently well.) I want to get fit for these clubs, although that may cause monetary strain since I wouldn't be able to grab a good deal on eBay without having to pay for the fitting process after buying the clubs. After purchasing clubs, I will likely invest in some good lessons.

Like I said, if I could get better it would make me ecstatic. I know a player of my quality should probably be looking at an iron set with some pretty heavy forgiveness, but I was at Golfsmith the other day checking out clubs like I love to do, and I was looking at the Titleist 775.CB irons. When I went home I checked out my Golf Digest Hot List magazine, and it had these irons under the category of Game Improvement, which I'm in. The only thing is, as you'd imagine from a Titleist iron, it said it wasn't overloaded with forgiveness.

My question is: should I get these irons, and work on improving my swing? Or should I just go with irons that would help my flawed swing out?

Thanks for any words of advice. Have a good one.

Sounds to me like you are trying to buy a game. You are only going to get better with practice. The clubs you have in your signature are all top of the line clubs, so what makes you think a change to Titliest irons is going to help your game? I would save some money, get some lessons, and practice. If the clubs you have arent fit for you, then spend a few bucks and get the fitted, but as I said, I dont think buying all new clubs is going to suddenly make all your swing flaws disappear.

Well, I am 100% aware as should everyone else be that buying clubs doesn't buy you game.

But I'm what you'd call a club *****. (word for, erm, an easy woman)

Like I said, I'm 15, I have a steady job in which I get about $600 a month from, and not much to spend it on but golf.

I have spent about 4k on clubs in my life and $80.00 on lessons. I just had my second lesson today at Chelsea Piers (for you NYC folks--it was great--Tim something. Very nice guy)

Anyway after TWO lessons, I have decided to spend my money on lessons not clubs!

It will also take some therapy to get over the video of my backswing. . . YUCK.

yeah dude your bag is filled nicely, i think you need to play more to get better. if you are only 15 you are probabaly working part time so head to the course everyday after school that you arent working and do work. your scores WILL start dropping.

Hey... if you got the money to blow, dont let me stop ya. I have the same equipment addiction that you and most everyone else on this forum has. My advice, spend the most money on shafts. They are the engine of the club. Get your driver Pured. Best $10 in golf.

Hello.

What's wrong with the TaylorMade irons you already have?

IMO, if you're shooting 90-95, if you jump straight to Titleist 775.CBs, I don't think it'll improve your game. These clubs (your TMs and the Titlesists) arent that different: both are cavity-backs, both are oversized, both are stainless steel.... On the other hand.....if you go for a demo and they 'feel' better for you, then a custom-fit and trade-in might be on the cards. However, I really would look at some lessons. BTW, 15-years old and you can nail the driver 250-275yds??? Impressive.

Yeah. I go to the gym every day before work and otherwise I'm a big kid, 6 feet tall and about 175 lbs, I can get a lot of weight behind the ball.

lucky you. i just turned 16. am just under 5'7 and all of 125 pounds. average drives are a wimpy 225-230. =/

i would imagine you hit your 7 iron further though? i hit mine 150 . but yeah i was expecting to look down at your signature and see some costco set or something. but nah stick with what you got. unless you're gonna trade your shizz in and just switch around cause i can definitely relate to the club hoing.. only do that if those clubs feel considerably better than the ones you currently have though.

I would be able to hit my 7 iron farther if I didn't have such poor iron play.

This may hit a few points that haven't been questioned, but it does hit a few that have. I made this post at another forum:
Well I'm sorry to say to those who suggested otherwise, but I'm already far too far into the Club Ho'ing to stop or prevent it. Also, I am aware that since driving is my biggest problem that I should look there first, but I have been happy with my SQ and it's my terrible Wood swing that is doing that. I have problems having an iron-like plane and swing with my driver.

Get your driver what? (I'm not trying to be difficult; I haven't heard the term before in this context). Where do I do this and how?

Check out this site. It should give you all the info you need on the Puring process. I know you can get this done at various club makers, or if you order a new shaft from say Golfsmith, you can get it pre-pured.

I am shocked with this post.. First off someone said a wimpy 220-230 yard drive..

Wimpy?? Is that a joke?

And the 15 year old driving 275 yards??

Anyway, I learned early in this game that golf clubs will give you more confidence than anything, unless you are shooting a 5-10 handicap you will learn more from lessons and practice than any single club out there

what is your normal score on 18 holes? How high is too high( a number would be nice)

I used to have my actual number but since my dad also uses this account he took the liberty to adjust it to his so we both agreed on "too high."

I don't have an official handicap but I shoot around 95 on average. Well said fastfed.

Spending 90% of your time on short game will improve it faster! The higher your average score is, the bigger impact short game practice will have. Take it from a guy in the 4-6 range (and a club junkie).

yes. and I really don't understand what's so shocking/surprising about me saying that. In all my high school matches a fair amount of people are crushing the ball past me. (and I don't exaggerate with my yardage. my average drives are a little over 225). in districts this past week, 2 kids in my group were hitting a good 75 yards past me, and one of them was straight in the fairway every time too.. so. this makes me feel inadequate, yes i realize this is a stupid insecurity but I can't help wishing I could hit it further than I currently do.

what i said above relates to this as well. i realize this blah blah blah. but yeah I have a stupid but irrepressible desire to want to hit much longer.

    • Day 11: did mirror work for a while. Worked on the same stuff.
    • I'm not sure you're calculating the number of strokes you would need to give correctly. The way I figure it, a 6.9 index golfer playing from tees that are rated 70.8/126 would have a course handicap of 6. A 20-index golfer playing from tees that are rated 64/106 would have a course handicap of 11. Therefore, based on the example above, assuming this is the same golf course and these index & slope numbers are based on the different tees, you should only have to give 5 strokes (or one stroke on the five most difficult holes if match play) not 6. Regardless, I get your point...the average golfer has no understanding of how the system works and trying to explain it to people, who haven't bothered to read the documentation provided by either the USGA or the R&A, is hopeless. In any case, I think the WHS as it currently is, does the best job possible of leveling the playing field and I think most golfers (obviously, based on the back & forth on this thread, not all golfers) at least comprehend that.
    • Day 115 12-5 Skills work tonight. Mostly just trying to be more aware of the shaft and where it's at. Hit foam golf balls.
    • Day 25 (5 Dec 25) - total rain day, worked on tempo and distance control.
    • Yes it's true in a large sample like a tournament a bunch of 20 handicaps shouldn't get 13 strokes more than you. One of them will have a day and win. But two on one, the 7 handicap is going to cover those 13 strokes the vast majority of the time. 20 handicaps are shit players. With super high variance and a very asymmetrical distribution of scores. Yes they shoot 85 every once in a while. But they shoot 110 way more often. A 7 handicap's equivalent is shooting 74 every once in a while but... 86 way more often?
