Hi all,

Lately I have been working on getting my weight forward at impact with my golf swing because I have been hitting a few fat shots here and there.  I have used several drills to help me with this such as the half ball under my left foot (I am right-handed).  But one thing I have noticed recently is that when I start my down swing all press down with the left foot like I am supposed to and it feels like all my weight is on my left side right after transition, but by the time I get down to impact and the beginning of the follow through I feel as if I am still on my right side or I am pulling up by that point.

So do I need to start having my weight forward later in the downswing?

Thanks for the replies!

Shouldn't the half ball be on the outside of the right foot? Or is this some weird drill I haven't heard about?

Anyway, can't really know without video but I would think that pushing down the left foot and extending the left leg would push you backwards. A better drill would be to put an alignment sticking up out of the ground outside of your left foot and get your left hip to touch it before impact while maintaining some flex in the left knee well through impact.

I don't think the weight is forward on the start of the downswing and then goes back in that short amount of time. What might be happening is that the head is going forward when you feel you're transferring forward and then you're tipping back. Tough to say exactly what is going on without seeing a video.

Try making slow downswings, without hitting a ball, transferring the weight forward into a balanced finish. Film yourself doing that and post it.

@mvmac Here is an iron swing where I at least try to get my weight forward.  I hope this helps some!

Thanks again!

This isn't about what you are working on but it looks like your setup needs some work. Turn your feet out more this will help your right leg straighten in the back swing and free your hips to turn more.

I re-named the thread and moved it to the Member Swings forum.

You do a decent job of getting your weight forward, the left foot needs to be turned out more so the left knee could travel further forward but your lower center does transfer with your head staying relatively steady. The feeling of the weight staying on your right side is due to you lifting the right heel too early off the ground which leads to getting some weight "stuck" into the toes of your right foot. But you can see from the right pic that you aren't "hanging back".

The issue IMO isn't really getting the weight forward it's sequencing the arms with the pivot. On the backswing there is a lack of wrist hinge and that leads to the the arms trailing the pivot.

Note the difference in where the hands are when the club shaft is parallel to the ground. This is where you get the sensation that you need to "pull up" otherwise you'd hit the ground 3 feet behind the ball.

Here's how I would change things.

- Check your grip, make sure the grip lies in the fingers of each hand and not the palms.

- Do this drill as you feel a "softer" upper back on the backswing. That will help keep the arms and elbows more in front of you and allow them to be in a better position to fire down on the downswing. When you right shoulder blade and elbow retract behind you the upper back will feel more "stiff" and that effects the wrist angles and sequencing.

@mvmac Are you saying that hinging of the wrist is something that "just happens" with the proper grip.  Or is it something that I need to actively do with each swing?

Thanks!

Everyone is a little different but the first step would be to check the grip. Makes sense to get it "for free" first than to force it dynamically. The position of the grip in the hands is important for how the wrists work.

Hey @mvmac I was abl e to get outside today and get another video after I worked on my grip.  What do you think?  I feel like I do have more wrist hinge at the top of the back swing but when the club is parallel to the ground in the downswing, my hands appear to be in the same spot as before... I wonder why this is?

Thank you for any and all advice!

It's how you're releasing the club. You have a medium club release instead of a late club release. You're not holding onto the lag as long. It's not casting because with your arm parallel you're fine. Casters have already started releasing then.

Casting:

Maintaining lag - this is between A5 and A6:........................... And this is A6:

The picture on the left shows where your arms are in A6, but notice where her club is. Yours is parallel. If you want to maintain your lag longer, I'm sure Mike has a drill to help with this.

Looks better on the backswing. Next step would be to focus on Key #2, getting the lower center, weight more forward on the downswing. That'll help with the arms/lag piece.

  • 2 months later...

Here is me now at the top of the backswing.  I feel like I may have improved to where I have some more hinge?  What do you guys think?

However I still am really struggling with syncing the arms with the pivot.  You can see my hands are nowhere near my thigh like @mvmac showed with the golfer in an earlier photo.   Looking at this I can see that I didn't do a good job of getting my weight forward.  If I were to get my weight forward, would that make my arms sync with my pivot or is there something I need to do along with getting my weight forward better?

Thanks!

I'd take a look at this post again, especially the bit about keeping the upper back "soft". That'll help with syncing the arms with the pivot. When you extend the torso the way you do, that pulls the shoulder blades back, pulling the elbows apart, making it harder to fully hinge the wrists and causes the arms to fall "behind" the pivot.

    • Best drive I've ever hit: I will not be answering any questions about the rest of the hole. Or the round, for that matter.
    • I tried hybrids way back when TaylorMade introduced the copper orange Firesole Rescue, the clubhead having been made of titanium which was still relatively new even in drivers back then. I couldn't hit it well at all, and while the success of hybrids suggests that the modern ones must be quite good,  I'm perfectly happy with the 5, 7, and 9-woods.  Early ones of mine were Top Flite Intimidator 400s made by Spalding... and also made of titanium, now that I think of it.  I still have them in my basement. I do bag a driving iron, but it's a one-trick-pony that never sees fairway use.
    • The last time I played Maxfli balls, Dunlop was still making them. How long ago was that? Mostly, though, I used to play Top Flites (original 336 dimple model) when Spalding was still making them. Now I play the Pro V1x. Last time that I ordered some, Titleist was still making them. Let's see how long that lasts.
    • Once, on a course in Middleton, Massachusetts that I used to love but has since closed down,  I hit the wrong half of a huge, UK style double green.  Then I made the hundred foot putt.  Tough to  forget that one.
    • No. But if I can still play next year, I'll almost certainly be even worse. That's the reality of not being young.🙁
