I am 67 and have played golf for 50 years.  I play about 25 rounds per year.  Live in the Midwest.  Shoot 78-82

I have a swing speed of about 80 and play a NXT Tour S.  Also have just started using the Bridgestone E-7.

Hit drive about 210 and 6 iron 150 yards.

Am I using the best ball.  Interested in distance more than performance as I have lost a lot of distance the past 8-10 years.

Thanks

If you're primarily focused on distance, you could do worse than the Titleist Velocity. It's a fairly long ball. Not the greatest around the greens, but that's the basic trade-off of distance vs. greenside spin.

Caveats: I haven't played their Velocity model, and my SS is >80.

Comparing the NXT Tour S and DT Solo, the Solo is longer for me and performs better on and around the green - just a softer feel.

Still winter here, and I am eager to compare the new Chrome Soft to the DT. I'm expecting the urethane cover to make a difference. On the other hand it's also a difference in price points between 38.99 and 20.99, something like that.

Short version - try the DT.

Any "low compression" ball will give slower swing speeds better distance.

The Precept, Srixon, Callaway, Bridgestone, Top Flight, Taylor Made, heck seems like all manufacturers are

targeting the Senior golfers with quality balls.

Could be due to the amount of Baby Boomers "who have money and are spending money" on something they have dream of all their life.

@jimh o you and keep up what appears a great journey you have traveled in playing golf.

Also, check out the new Nike driver. I went to the golf expo yesterday and was hitting all the new latest and greatest clubs.

The Nike is on to something which I feel will benefit anyone.

That's not necessarily true.

I've typed this out a few times through the years.

A firmer ball will rebound with more ball speed at the same swing speed - ANY swing speed. Lower compression balls can help sometimes because they'll spin more, and spin helps keep the ball aloft, more so at slower swing speeds.

Now, then, golf balls have become so engineered that we can't just think about them as "compression" alone because the different layers interact differently. For example, outer layers can be lower compression (because you might care more about spin with a 7-iron than with a driver), while the core can be higher compression to retain some rebound speed when hit with a driver (and help cut down some on spin).

Ok, then I stand corrected. @iacas

Here's an interesting article which may clarify ball performances for players.

The site shows the selection of balls which are suggested for different level of players.

I am 63 and did not start playing until I was 40 and my scores are about 10 strokes higher than yours.  I have a 90 mph SS and lost distance going from the NXT Tour to the NXT Tour S for what its worth.  If you are looking for more distance it is very difficult to pick an exact ball from a distance. but since my SS is only 10 mph more than yours I can recommend a couple to try:  Maxfli U/3 -very long for me with the benefit of urethene around the green;  Callaway Supersoft - hit my longest drive of the year yet good around the green.  Now to add fuel to the fire with the discussion regarding the effect of ball compression and swing speed I hit the Prov1X almost as long as the Supersoft, but did have control problems.  I left the NXT Tour line of balls realizing there were balls as good or better for my SS at about half the price.  There are so many choices I would try a few and have fun doing it.  I suspect that you will wind up playing a different ball.

I'll be interested in trying the new Callaway Chrome ball. Has anyone hit them yet? I'm in the Northeast so it will be a while for me, months in fact.

Do you mean the 2015 Callaway Chrome Soft or the 2013 Hex Chrome? I thought the Hex Chrome was very good, especially later on when it could be had for a song online. I haven't tried the new one yet (haven't been able to play and find any in the woods, haha).

    • Day 11: did mirror work for a while. Worked on the same stuff.
    • I'm not sure you're calculating the number of strokes you would need to give correctly. The way I figure it, a 6.9 index golfer playing from tees that are rated 70.8/126 would have a course handicap of 6. A 20-index golfer playing from tees that are rated 64/106 would have a course handicap of 11. Therefore, based on the example above, assuming this is the same golf course and these index & slope numbers are based on the different tees, you should only have to give 5 strokes (or one stroke on the five most difficult holes if match play) not 6. Regardless, I get your point...the average golfer has no understanding of how the system works and trying to explain it to people, who haven't bothered to read the documentation provided by either the USGA or the R&A, is hopeless. In any case, I think the WHS as it currently is, does the best job possible of leveling the playing field and I think most golfers (obviously, based on the back & forth on this thread, not all golfers) at least comprehend that.

    • Day 25 (5 Dec 25) - total rain day, worked on tempo and distance control.
    • Yes it's true in a large sample like a tournament a bunch of 20 handicaps shouldn't get 13 strokes more than you. One of them will have a day and win. But two on one, the 7 handicap is going to cover those 13 strokes the vast majority of the time. 20 handicaps are shit players. With super high variance and a very asymmetrical distribution of scores. Yes they shoot 85 every once in a while. But they shoot 110 way more often. A 7 handicap's equivalent is shooting 74 every once in a while but... 86 way more often?
