I'm new to the group and would appreciate any help. I've done a down the line but it is a bit dark so I may have to do another with better lighting.

I've been Playing Golf for: 18 months after a 10 year break

My current handicap index or average score is: 35.

My typical ball flight is: Low to medium. If I make good contact I get a good straight flight with a slight draw.

The shot I hate or the "miss" I'm trying to reduce/eliminate is: A snap hook or a thin shot especially with fairway woods.

I'd love to see your swing in better lighting and in slow motion. Then we can give you more precise feedback. The iPhone 5s and 6 both have really good slow motion capture (120 or 240fps). Here's a few key things to check out also. http://thesandtrap.com/b/playing_tips/filming_your_swing http://thesandtrap.com/a/helpful-instructional-threads-and-links

Like to see you turn the left foot out more at address so the left knee can transfer forward longer and you can open up more on the downswing.

Thanks @cedrictheo

I may not get to re-record for a few days but I'll put the new one into this thread when it's done.

The thing that sticks out to me is your key #2 or weight forward. Your hips are not far enough forward at impact. (Hips slide back more than id like to see in backswing and then don't slide far enough forward in downswing) Check this out to get a better idea of the proper pivot http://thesandtrap.com/t/54540/a-centered-pivot I'd do this drill to get the feeling of having your weight far enough forward... Also make sure to listen to Mvmac and get those feet flared out at address.

@cedrictheo I've tried to edit the original video using the SloMo app as I won't be able to get to the range for a while now. Hopefully this is better.

I would also add to @cedrictheo 's comment that flaring your left foot more will help with Key #2 Weight Forward and also the centered pivot.

Thanks @cedrictheo @mvmac and @boogielicious .

I've watched the video on centered pivot and can see that I seem to have a bit of excess movement going on in my hips/lower body. I can also see my shoulders going backwards more than rotating downward.

Rather than try to fix everything I think I;ll work on flaring my feet first and then on the pivot.

Thanks for the help.

I'd focus on the Key #2 stuff for now. Flare the feet and transfer the left knee/weight forward longer. Work on the "squish the ball" feel.

Also, take some time to check out and post in other threads, we have A LOT of great content on the site.

I played my first round in a while after getting some swing advice from @cedrictheo, @mvmac and @boogielicious. For the first time ever I broke 100 (93). Feeling really pleased with myself and enjoyed the round. I shot 44 on the front and probably could have broken 90 if I had made some better decisions on the back nine where I shot 49 (the repeat of the front 9).

As someone playing of a 35 Hcp it is really pleasing to shoot a score this low. I thought I'd be stuck making double, triple and more for ages. Today gives me hope that I can shoot lower scores and really challenge myself.

Just goes to show that changing one thing at a time and being patient can get some good results.

Sweet! Congrats to you! You're gonna have to set some new goals for your golf game in 2015! :D

Awesome @Robbo68 ! There's lots more good info here to guide you as you progress.

Just curious, where did you put the camera for the face on view? In front of the divider or behind it?

Steve

Hi @nevets88 , The divider had a recess in it that I could balance my phone on.

Ah, I thought there wasn't enough room for a tripod. You'll find that using video, ranges can be not amenable to unobstructed views, but if you're clever, like with what you did, you can make due.

    • Temporary grandstands are in the general area though, a bunker is not so your relief options are different.  I don't really understand what is so difficult about this.  You should be more upset with whoever organizes/runs your league for not implementing GUR, not the rule itself. Especially since this is a league and if it's at the same course every time it's likely that this isn't the first time the bunker has filled up completely with water.
    • Not sure if this is best to post here or start a new thread but I'm curious which stats you pay most attention to/how you utilize Shot Scope's data/charts to drive your improvement/practice?   I have 81 holes in Shot Scope now so starting to get a decent sample size of data about my game. I can obviously see the strokes gained numbers but I'm not quite sure where to go from there in terms of how to assess what specifically I need to work on.  Obviously it's approaches and short game for me, but when I go into those tabs on the left for those specific areas, I'm not quite sure how to use the information to make it actionable in my practice.
    • I guess we’re kind of getting into semantics here, but you state “trading a bunker lie for a grass lie”. I would argue that a bunker under water is no longer a bunker. It is basically a small pond where there isn’t supposed to be one. The course has an unplayable condition due to weather and poor maintenance. Hitting a ball out of three inches of water is not a realistic option any more than hitting through a temporary grandstand is. Just my opinion.
    • So here’s the thing, you’ve treated the bunker as if it were GUR, which would actually be the appropriate course of action except you and your playing partners are not authorized to determine that for yourselves. The Committee in this case would be the golf course and in an ideal world, they would have handled their responsibilities and told you at the beginning of the round that X bunkers are under water, treat them as GUR. I’m actually ok with how you handled the situation in a casual round TBH but this is the rules forum and you asked about a rules clarification so there’s a specific procedure for that. As for your proposed rule, I don’t agree with the logic at all for the reason I outlined in my previous post. You are trading a bunker lie for a lie in grass for no penalty. And also, there are already rules in place that address the exact situation you found yourself in, including relief options for if the bunker was appropriately marked as GUR or not.
    • Someone asked would pros accept someone else keeping score. It’s done in every other sport. That’s what scorekeepers are for. It’s an antiquated rule. It’s fine for non-professionals.  I feel like there is a lot of resistance to rule in golf, as if these rules were brought down on stone tablets by Moses.
