Lately - when I go to the range, or even warm up before a round, it's a disaster. Everything off the hosel - literally every. single. shot. Then I step out onto the course and shoot a clean low 80s round. It randomly started happening to the point where I can't even practice. Even after 200 swings, same issue. Impact off the inner heel / hosel. Any suggestions?

Search the site for shanks - there are some helpful threads on it. I don't know why they would be happening on the range only though. That seems strange.

2 drills I've used to help me with the shanks:

  1. Put something outside the ball that you will hit if you hit the ball off the hosel. You can use a ball, but something more solid might be more effective. I used a shag bag once. It scared the crap out of me, but it worked.
  2. Tee up the ball to driver height, and hit the ball off the tee. I tend to do this drill standing away from the ball as if I were hitting the ball off the ground instead of the tee (if that makes sense).

Hope that helps. I've been through this recently, too, and it's super frustrating.

It happens to all of us.  For me, it is because I am rushing the session or warm up.  I go back to basics and slow down.  I make sure my set up, takeaway, etc are back where they should be.  Then I do some 1/2 and 3/4 shots to get the feel of good contact back.  A lot of times I am just too close to the ball because the range stalls are a bit cramped and there are other people hitting.

I always start my range sessions now with the same warm up including 1/2 and 3/4 warm up shots.  Not many, but enough to set my self up for a good session.

QFT. Really good stuff there for @eastcoastshanks If I ever start shanking the ball I slow my swing down or make partial swings until I stop shanking the ball. I might just be chipping the ball out there, but instead of just continuing to shank every ball at least you are working on checkpoints in the swing.

Just something I've noticed. It's when I've been practicing my swing in front of the mirror inside. I stand too close. It's because I'm worried about hitting something. So my swing gets a bit too compact. When I get to the range, lesson, whatever, my first few shots are hosel rockets - sometimes they even go left, and that's really difficult. It just takes a bit of adjustment getting used to where the ball is supposed to be and swinging unimpeded. Slow the swing down until you get the positions right and you're hitting the ball solid, then speed up the tempo again.

I find when I practice in front of a mirror or a recorder that I rely on it. I get all messed up because I can't see what my body is doing. What I have done now is start off using a recorder or mirror for 35/40 hits or so to make sure your programming it into your muscle memory. After that hit bunch of shots without it and check towards end of you sesh. I find its a good balance between programming muscle memory and just doing. It sure has helped my game out a lot.

    • The term I hear most often is "double teeing" which means the course/club has starting times from both the #1 and #10 tee.  I have encountered this many times and we know if we are the first group off #10, we may well get to #1 and have to wait because there are groups still with tee times yet to tee of #1.  In most instances, where the course/club has a starter, he normally explains this situation.  In this case, the pro advised what you would could/would encounter making the turn to #1.  And, that is exactly what happened.  Probably would have been wise to talk to the pro after playing back 9 and ask when you could go off #1 since apparently that club does not double tee.   Regardless, the outburst towards the other group was uncalled for.  And, I don't blame the member for being upset.  As a member of a private club, you are responsible for the actions of your guest.  I have played many times as a guest in the UK and I am pretty damn sure my host was responsible for my actions while at the club.  I know at the clubs I have belonged to here in the US, that is the way it is.  As a matter of fact, the member may find himself being brought before management and facing possible suspension.  So, I don't blame him for being upset.  However, as the host, he really should have stepped up and put a stop to the OP's actions.  OP makes this statement "I now understand that standards are different on the "private course." But I'll take those lessons to the muni, too."  No, the standards are not different.  You, sir, seem to be just a bit hard headed and belligerent, even if you are college professor...which possibly explains a lot.   JMHO
    • Day 32: worked for about 10 minutes on my drill. Filmed it as well for a check in. I think it’s slightly better but still seeing some issues.
    • Day 44 (26 Dec 25)  -  played in the Friday men’s shootout with a twist - used the Toney Penna persimmons and MacGregor blades - had a blast playing these clubs.  They really help in zoning in on making solid ball contact.  Scoring was solid - had several looks at birdie and had a few par saves.  Overall a day of focused course management.
