Well, went to play a quick 9 after class and before finishing Kinetics homework yesterday and I'm not quite sure what to think of my round. I've been playing for about 2 months but not all that often because of school. I hit the ball well overall (by my standards) but it didn't translate to a better score. The score stayed right around where I've normally been at. Was kind of a strange course to play, a lot of elevation changes, water, bunkers, things of that nature. Cost myself some strokes with my putting on a couple holes, but with how I was hitting the ball I really didn't expect my score to be as bad as it was. Up until this point I've kind of had a swing during practice that was good, but out on the course that same swing didn't show up. I finally feel like my practice swing is starting to become my swing during a round, everything about it just feels better.

I guess the main question is, is it normal to have a round where you feel like you played pretty well but have a score that doesn't show it? Perhaps this is why so many people love golf and yet hate it at the same time?

Yes its normal, and it works both ways. Sometimes you really seem to strike it well and you don't score and some days you hit it lousy and end up scoring pretty well. It's because some rounds you just seem to get all the right bounces.

I shot 68, 68 in a tournament this year, the first day I struck the ball pretty poorly but I never really got myself into huge amounts of trouble, and the putts fell when I needed them. The Second day I hit the ball really well (17 GIR) but no putts fell.

It just goes to show you sometimes you're the dog, sometimes you're the fire hydrant

Yes very normal. I have had days I have stuck the ball very well but had 1 bad hole, and a couple of missed shots and scored poorly. On the other side I have had days that I miss hit alot of shots and just had good bounces and made putts and scored well but played horrible.
Thats what makes this game so great.

Happens often, sometimes I hit poor shots then hit a really good shot to the green and one putt. I don't watch my score until I end the round and add it up, usually end up shooting alot better than I feel I played.

When I feel like I'm striking the ball well, and my score doesn't end up where I think it will it's usually due to my putting.
Likewise when I feel like I'm just "slapping" at the ball, but my score is better than expected it's usually because of my putting. If I could get my ball striking and putting to show up on the same day I could put together a pretty good round.....

That seems to be my problem too.

My last round was so ugly I didn't want to finish the last 4 holes. I was frustrated to all ends. After I finished my buddy totaled up my score and it was 96. I usually hit between 90-94 anyway so I wasn't that far off. The scary thing was I only had 28 putts. The round before that I hit a 92 but I had 38 putts. Ouch... If only they would come together on the same day.

    • I was there just for sunday, and it went smoothly. Thanks @Hardspoon for helping in setting this up.
    • I say this in believing the guy should just pay you and he's a d**k for not.  Do you guys play by the USGA rules strictly? If so, then the claim is valid. It sucks, but it is. Again, he is a d**k for being that nitpicky over it. If he wants to play the game of waiting for you to finish to have his ah-ha moment, again he's a d**k. Though, if the putter is non-conforming, you maybe able to claim that it is not a club?  Just talk to your group and don't invite him back.
    • Couple of added points.  It was pink and maybe 18 long.  I am 6 1   And he waited until the round was over to say something when he was in my 4 some in the other cart.
    • I would have paid you. I think it's a reasonable assumption that the extra putter was not in play.  Having said that "Did you declare the extra putter out of play?"  This person seems like a bit of a weenie and he is also setting a dangerous precedent. Let's say he wins next month. Then when it's your turn to pay up, you could refuse. Telling him "I timed you on hole 8 and you searched for your ball and found it at 3 minutes and 1 second. So, you should have taken stroke, plus distance and didn't." You could then show him your stopwatch feature on your phone where you timed it out to 3:01 and say "See."  I actually would just let it go and assume the guy is a weenie. Because doing stuff like that takes the fun out of friendly bets. If he can't afford to pay up, he shouldn't bet.
