I strugle a lot also with this same issue (takeaway)... -yesterday, while I was practising I thought that would be really really helpful to see a great swing from the eyes of who is doing it... just imagine a GoPro in the head of Mc Illroy while he is starting his takeaway...would be a great reference for me to know how the club, hands, and arms start the swing... Because I see it from outside when I look at him, and while I´m doing the swing myself the feeling is totally different... just a thought.

This is the first one I found, seems to me there used to be a Tiger Woods one around somewhere but now I can't find it.

I´ve been thinking about my backswing since is a really important part of the whole swing. I have some doubts:

1. I should turn my shoulders, but when I do this I feel I taking the club inside the line.

2. I think I should keep the butt of the club pointing at the ball...Is that right?

3. If I take my club over the line the from my shoulders to the ball, is ok?

4. I feel I steep the club when I start the down swing. This could make me cut the ball (outside to inside path)?

Thanks,

Thanks,

1) Is it just a feel or does it really happen?

2) Depends on your golf swing. Furyk keeps the butt end of the club pointing at his feet. ;)

3) Over the line, as in at the top of the backswing? If so it depends on your swing. If you have good turn rates arms versus torso versus hips and you slightly overswing then no because the club has to cross the line or it's flat. Look at Phil or Bubba.

4) Typically yes. A flat to steep swing will generally produce an outside to in swing path. People who draw the ball either transition to a flatter swing plane (Fowler) or keep the shaft flat (Kuchar)

Thank you!

Ok, so I think I need some references to keep it under control:

- Keep my left arm parallel to the target line which is over the ball for a long time? it´s imposible to do when my left shoulder is over the ball.

- Feel that my left shoulder remains there (under my chin) when I start the downswing, in order to not coming over the top??

1) Depends if that is what you need to do with your swing. The left arm doesn't stay parallel to the target line. The hands move back and up, and the shoulders tilt on an axis. So the left arm has to angle away from the target line in some degree.

2) Again depends if that is what works for your golf swing and is what is needed.

Those two things you listed are feels, and may or may not be what you need to do. I recommend you stick your My Swing thread and get advice from Erik or Mike on what you need to work on as your priority piece. Work on the priority piece until you own it and then move on to the next piece. Trying to plant all these thoughts in your head doesn't work out good.

Funny enough, in that video the guy stamped down the grass behind the ball on the tee box, as is currently being discussed in another thread. Interesting. Seems really unnecessary.

@Jameson I agree with what @saevel25 is saying. We can't really diagnose feels without seeing the swing. And you don't want the lead arm parallel to the target line, that's really tough to do and won't produce a competent golf swing. The arms basically "follow" the pivot, the torso turning allows for the arms to gain depth.

I don't think about my takeaway as much as about how I want to finish However for the tee-ball I find that good takeaway that fits me is feeling like in taking the driver back with the right thenar muscle of my right hand. Sometimes I take the club back low below the height of the ball sometime slightly outside. Sometime I contract my right armpit as I contract the thenar muscles of my right hand This is all to get into a good position at the top of my swing at which point my whole left arm and grip will gradually tighten from my left armpit to the left hand when I drive thru the ball

    • Is it? I bought the Stack radar to replace my PRGR based on what Stack told me! When I am swinging for speed, the PRGR would miss 50%-80% of my backswings due to a higher speed. The stack seldom misses those- at least for me.
    • As an analyst by nature, I would like to compare the scores under both systems. It is something we can easily do if we have the data. I actually thought the new system was less fair to those whose game was on the decline - like mine! Old: Best 10 of last 20 scores with the .96 multiplier. Course handicap excluded course rating and overall par. New: Best 8/20. Course handicap includes course rating -par. My understanding is Stableford caps scores at Net double bogey like stroke play. If so, handicap should be slower to rise because you are only using 8 versus 10 scores. If I am missing something, I am curious enough to  want to understand what that may be. My home course tees that I play are 72.1/154 now. My best score out here is 82. When my game started to decline, my handicap didn’t budge for 13 rounds because of good scores in my first 8! I know I am an anomaly but my handicap has increased almost 80% in the past few years (with only a few rounds this year). For a few months I knew I was losing every bet because my game was nowhere near my handicap. I suspect I have steamrolled a few nuances but that shouldn’t matter much. When I have modeled this with someone playing the same tees and course, one good round, or return to form, will immediately reduce the handicap by some amount.
