Why are the numbers on the sole of woods read facing the heel and the numbers on irons facing the toe?

I guess historically, the irons hang in the bag with the toe down but woods are put in with the heads away from the irons to avoid damage.

Any thoughts?

Because that's how it is. That's how it's always been and forever shall be. The audacity of even bringing this topic up is appalling. :) Welcome to the forum! Actually I had no idea that was the case. Very interesting. Hope someone can shed some light on this bit of trivia.

On the irons I believe the numbers are that way just for club identification.

Woods are sold individually are more expensive so all the extra logos and such on the bottom are part of the marketing. Just go into Dick's sporting goods and see how the woods are displayed. If the logo was facing the other way it would be angled away from view.

I don't know why RandallT thinks my post is `audacious'. It doesn't matter how long things have been as they are, there is a reason for them being that way and since I have not been able to find the answer, I posted the question. I am new to SandTrap and I didn't expect to get an abusive reply to my first post. Good enough reason for me to withdraw.

He was being facetious and sarcastic. He put a smiley face at the end.

He was joking around with you, which is something friends and buddies and "good people" do.

Yes as they mention above, a sad attempt at a jovial welcome. My attempts at humor frequently go awry. No offense intended. I'm actually interested in this one so I was chiming in briefly in between errands today.
