About halfway through my bucket, I found that my right elbow and forearm were getting sore.  Is this a symptom of bad fundamentals/technique or just being out of shape?  I realize that you can't judge my fundamentals/technique without video -- unfortunately, I didn't have a camera with me --  but what are some possible reasons?

Thanks

Yeah, happens to me too; right fore-arm and elbow only.  For all the reasons you have mentioned.  Worse if on the mats.  Can't speak to your technique but if only now getting to practice, due to poor weather over winter, your body will be prone to soreness and injury. Go slower, take more rest and maybe  NSAID drugs may help, as may ice.  As various practice opportunities arise, esp on turf and short game, your problem should resolve and be gone for the summer.

I can only go for the long ball practice once per week, at 3 hour stints, unlimited balls, so very much tend to beat my body.

When i was a boy i saw many pictures of medieval holy men walking the streets of Europe beating themselves on their naked backs with thorny rose and bramble bushes, inflicting small but bloody wounds, hoping such self-defacement would give them some merit, for the next life.  I do the same with driver and hybrid but am full-on only for this life !

I get that sometimes if I've been on the mats and I've been hitting a lot of fat shots that day.  I guess something about beating my arm into the ground repeatedly didn't agree with me...who knew!

Thanks.  I was on mats and definitely hitting all kinds of shots: fat, thin, etc.  even occasionally a decent one!

That can't be good.  I know of a golfer with "unlimited balls" who ended hurting his back.  Too much of a good thing can lead to a bad result.

Back to OP, I have slightly sore right elbow area.  I think it is due to hitting the mat at wrong angle.

I'm very prone to tendonitis. Well let's just say I manage chronic tendonitis that was caused by an allergic reaction to Cipro several years ago. Every now and then it flares up.

I limit myself to no more than 100 balls per session. I hit groups of 5 balls. I'm working on full swing mechanics with a focus on the transition. If I get that right everything goes well.

I'll say to watch the pronation of your right arm. I had a flare up when we started getting me to hang onto the lag longer and releasing later through impact. You need strong forearms to do that. I have a natural medium release, and although it costs me some distance I went back to it.
