Hey everyone, this is my first post on here, but I have a question. I'm 18 years old and was wondering if taking a long divot is bad (they are long not deep). I'm taking these divots with my 60 degree through 8 iron, but the thing is I'm striking the ball really well. My flight path is good, I'm hitting the ball a mile and im getting good spin. I was just wondering should I be concerned that my longer divot will cause issues in the future or not worry about it as long as I am striking the ball well. Sorry if I posted this in the wrong are, like I said this is my first post.

Thanks,

Sam

Welcome to the forum Sam.  Divots are not bad if they are shallow and repeatable. As long as you are striking the ball before the ground, you are doing the right thing.

Any pictures? "Long" and "thin" won't mean quite the same thing to everyone. Another important thing to consider is the firmness of the turf. Softer turf is more likely create some long divots.

Divot size depends on the turf and the club for me. With my wedges I'll take large divots, dollar bill sized, and then they become smaller as I go up through the bag until I have more of a scrape than a true divot with my three wood. If they're not thick chunks of earth I would imagine that you're probably not coming in too steeply to create the divots, so I wouldn't worry about it. On wet ground though, all my divots get bigger with the short and long irons while my wedges, hybrid, and 3 wood stay about the same.

    • The hell is Thomas Fleetwood wearing? He looks like a divorced dad from 1998. Even the shoes are hideous
    • I was wondering this and haven't seen it on today's broadcast OR yesterday's, but apparently Cabrera did show up.  He currently has the third highest score for the week and is playing his last hole of this year's event.  I'm not particularly keen to see him, but I was wondering if he was present, and he seems to be.
    • Hatton hit 18 GIR.  That's incredible.   Rory's tee shot on #8 reminds me of a TV show, Get Smart, that I enjoyed watching as a kid.  The protagonist would often say "missed me by that much."  Rory missed avoiding the bunker by that much.
    • Rory is still going well! Pulling for him.
    • Day 556 - 2026-04-10 Played another 17 holes, this time skipping #11 to pass a group that was still on 14 when we were finishing up. 😛 Not as good as yesterday, but more distracted by the mind's eye.
