Hey guys! Greetings form Indianapolis.

So I started golfing about 2 months ago and so far have been really enjoying it, never really thought golf would be my thing, but I dig it. I have played 6 9 hole rounds and 1 18 hole round so far (which about killed me this weekend).

I have watched a bunch of David Leadbetter's instructional videos. I think he is a good teacher, and was easy to hold my interest. Overall I think watching the videos helped a ton, got me thinking about things during play and have substantially been improving my short game. My father-in-law sent my wife home with a Hank hanky DVD this weekend for me, but I didn't find his instruction that engaging. I think he hit 4 balls in the entire thing.

I just ordered Pelz Short Game Bible, and Putting Bible last night. Eagerly anticipating getting those in.


Anyway, I am glad to be here. I hope to learn a lot, and look forward to sharing and participating.

Welcome aboard. You've found a great resource here with TST Browse around and you'll start to see a framework emerge here to help you understand golf. Your ears should perk up when you see these terms discussed in detail: 5SK, LSW. Nobody here will put a hard sell on, but I've been here a couple years and can vouch that I've learned more in the past 2 years about golf than I had ever expected- mostly via those 2 acronyms. But the best part is you don't need to be an acolyte of just those ideas or that framework. Just join in the discussions when you've got something to say or ask. For the most part, it's friendly waters.

We were originally going to play Quail Ridge but ended up moving some things around and are going to do the following when we go in May Day 1 Tobacco Road Day 2 Southern Pines and Pine Needles Day 3 Tot Hill Farm There are a couple good course vlog/matches on YouTube at Southern Pines, it looks awesome.

      I got two trips lined up this year.  First, Pinehurst next month. Qual Ridge, Mid Pins, Southern Pines 😁, Mid South, Talamore. I am looking forward to playing Southern Pines since it got redone.  Second, a trip to eastern Wisconsin in early August. Whistling Straights, Blackwolf Run, Erin Hills.

      You are probably doing the right thing in having more fairway woods or hybrids in your bag than irons. Just easier to maximize ball speed for you swing speed to get the proper gaps.  A driver is teed up, so you have more leeway there. The 7-wood is probably more optimized for carry for you. A slower swing speed needs higher launch and spin to keep the ball in the air. With the 3-wood, it probably launches too low with not enough spin to keep it in the air.  If you are not going to go get lessons, or do some sort of swing speed training, go get fitted for clubs. Clearly your mix-match of equipment is not optimized.

      32 putts are average for a single digit handicap golfer. Limiting three putting is the biggest task. Speed control is the most important aspect of putting. Probably the 2nd most important is aim.  The putter is going to rotate open a bit on the backstroke. It might stay square to the arc of the putting stroke, but that does mean the face opens up a bit on the backstroke when measured against where the face is oriented at address. Go get a putter lesson as well.
