I've always had a slightly open stance when I'm playing well. It lets me get my hips through. I remember seeing something in Golf Digest many, many years ago about how most of the PGA Tour stars at the time had an open stance (about 10°).

I start to get into a bit of trouble when my hips and shoulders align themselves with my feet - slightly open. They should be square.

Do you have an open stance? Closed? If so, why? Why not? Is it something with which you struggle?

My golf teacher (tongue in cheek) once told me i was one of the best "flickers" of a golf ball he'd ever seen. This was in jest of just how much hands i use.................

This leads on to my aiming.I too like to try to aim a little open with the feet, and sure, shoulders square. If i get aimed right with feet,or shoulders especially the old "quick hands" come in to try to rescue me from the ball dissapearing to the right where the shoulders aim,and then the balls gonna go just wherever it fancies - left or right.

I suppose my aiming is like a 50 yard bump and run in minature: Feet left as Erik says to "pre-clear" the hips, and shoulders square for obvious reasons. If i get "cramped" by aiming right of the target (im right handed) its the start of a bad chain of events.

I try and square everything for the reason you stated. I want to make sure my hips and shoulders are also square.

The only time I open my stance a bit is on any of my wedge shots inside 90 yards. It feels more natural and helps me control the shot.

Fairways and Greens.

I've been going to the Faldo institute for the past few months and we've totally started from scratch and there option is that the stance should be square.

Personaly I think the most important thing is to have the hips and shoulders square.

Hogan used to have his feet slightly open on longer shots then square it up as he went up the set so it can't be too bad!

I also have a slightly open stance, because it helps me get my hips through. When I stand square, I have a tendancy to draw the ball too much. When I'm hitting it my best, I'm a little open, and hit it dead straight.

I've been watching the old Bobby Jones videos, and it seems he kept a square stance, but turned his front toe slightly toward the target to allow for easier hip rotation.

It's funny that u brought this up because this is exactly what I'm working on with my instructor. Right now we're trying to keep my entire body square at setup and my shoulders square at impact. If you watch most players, their shoulders are almost always square at impact. Hips pour on the power, look at Tiger!

Anyways, I prefer to keep my left foot flaired out just a little bit towards the target because I'm not so flexible. The rest of my stance is somewhat square. At impact, my shoulders tend to open up too much like almost every amateur but fixing this just takes practice. The golf swing is really a sideblow, according to my coach.

I generally keep everything square when I line up. I am fairly flexible and dont have a problem with not being able to bring parts of my body through where they need to be. Sometimes I think I need to adjust my feet to aim where I want to, but when I do so I end up aiming somewhere else, I guess I just need to trust the way I lined it up the first time because it is usually right....

    • I have a putting mat in my office. It's 9 feet long almost 4 feet wide. I've drawn a line down it in order to practice hitting my line and stuff. Works fine for what it is.  While I'm not a fan of lining up a line on my golfball for every putt. I think for practice sessions it can have a lot of value.  To me this product makes sense. This is the first time I've seen it. It showed up as an add on the right side of the TST webpage. What do you all think? PuttAIM Laser Training Aid Get ready to dominate the greens like never before. PuttAIM Golf is a golf putting aid that uses laser technology to help you improve your game. This device works to ensure your putts are aligned properly and on track...
    • Of course. I've used different words to start, but like 90-95% of the time it's been this one. And I'm unlikely to switch now.

    • Angle is not a factor. I hit the ball 100’ high. Par is net birdie. My CH is 16. The rough between the bunkers is like 10’ wide though. That’s not something you’re going to try to hit on purpose. Most of the area to the left of that is fescue/native vegetation and I’m pretty sure there isn’t a flat lie in any of it. It’s the second hole.
