Dave, It sounds like you know golf in Ireland quite well having been there several times. If you have not been down to the South West of Ireland before, then I would make this your next trip. With the likes Tralee, Ballybunion, Old Head, Waterville, and Lahinch you can't go wrong. Even Trump's revised Doonbeg is getting good reviews! My recommendation is to stay in Killarney town centre and enjoy the full extent of the Irish craic... plus a few pints of the black stuff! As you know the whole Irish experience is half of the trip.

Thanks, Guy, this is pretty close to our tentative plan.  This will be the first trip to Ireland for golf for some of our friends, so Killarney seemed a good hub.  Unlike some of the golf hubs in Scotland, the Irish links seem to be spread a bit further apart, and Killarney is central to some of the really good ones.  I'll be covering some of the same ground as in previous trips, but that's not exactly a hardship.  We're looking at the Killeen House, which is outside of the town a bit, but the pub in the hotel is open until the last guest goes to bed.  Since the guests are also the bartenders, that's not a problem.  We may also spend a couple of nights in Lahinch, its a great golf course, but in my opinion a bit too far for a day trip from Killarney.  We'll also have some non-golfers with us, so a few non-golf touring days may be in the plans.

I'm hoping to get to the northwest of Ireland and Northern Ireland some day, but that may be a trip for a smaller group, perhaps just my wife and I.  Similarly, I'd love to get to Cruden Bay and Royal Aberdeen, and go on up past Nairn to my favorite, Royal Dornoch, but that'll have to wait for another time as well.

Once again, welcome to The Sand Trap, I'll be very interested to read your contributions.

Dave

Hello TheSandTrap!

My name is Guy, Director of Golfbreaks.com. We’ve just joined TheSandTrap as a sponsor and I’d like to take the opportunity to introduce myself and the company to you.

We’re a specialist golf tour operator based out of Windsor, UK with offices in Charleston, SC and Copenhagen, Denmark. We have been providing golf vacations, to mainly European golfers, since 1999. Currently we sell over 2000 golf destinations worldwide and this year will send over 220,000 golfers on golf trips.

In 2013 my co-Director Daniel Grave set up our USA office to expand our American operations and bring our bespoke service (and great value vacations!) to golfers Stateside.

Our aim is to enthuse about the wonders of UK and Irish golf and encourage as many of you as possible to take a trip this side of the pond and play some iconic courses. The golf truly is great, and it is not as expensive as you might think!

You can find more details about our UK and Irish tours service on our USA website at:  http://usa.golfbreaks.com

If anyone needs any advice on golf or places to stay in Scotland, Ireland, England or Wales or is planning a golf trip to Europe then we would love to hear about it.

In the meanwhile, play well!

Guy

Guy,

First, thanks so much for being a sponsor.

Second, I browsed your site and it is well laid out. The course pictures are stunning!  I do have a question.  My wife likes to golf, but not as much as I do. Can you assist your customers on areas of interest near the courses, such as places of interest, great restaurants, etc?

Thanks again.

Scott, thanks for your kind words.

Yes, absolutely we can help recommend nearby attractions in all the regions where we provide golf vacations. We have worked in these areas for over 15 years, so know them very well and can advise which castles, gardens, galleries, museums, distilleries, breweries, walks, etc. to visit or do, as well as local restaurants and bars.

I am sure that other TST forum users also have good knowledge of these destinations. Dave in the post above also know some great spots.

I hope this helps. Guy

Scott, the beer was damn good over there, but the real treat is the whisky!

As guy says, I'm sure there are lots of folks in TST who'd love to share experiences and advice if you decide to take a golf  holiday.  I know that for me, I really enjoy talking about the trips I've made, its helps me remember some of the fun times.  Another great source, especially for non-golf info like dining and tourism options, is www.tripadvisor.com.

Alas, the incident with Jim Beam and the Blues Brothers in 1979 ended my appreciation for whiskey. :-P

Jim and his cousin Jack have had that effect on a lot of people.

If you are enjoying The Open and feeling slightly Scottish (or feeling like playing some Scottish Courses) then we are currently running a Sweepstakes to win a 7 night, 7 round Golf Vacation to Scotland for 4 people.

It is a truly special prize, so worth entering (...and getting your playing partners to enter!). All the accommodation is top end 5* and the golf includes rounds on: Turnberry (Ailsa and Kintyre), Carnoustie, Kingbarns and Gleneagles (PGA, Kings or Queens)!

You can enter here:  http://usa.golfbreaks.com/scotland-vacation-sweepstake

It is currently also being featured on TST's home page. Apologies for the shameless plug, but I think that this is worth a mention. Guy

    • Day 16: range night! Worked on long game for about 40 minutes, with a good solid 20 minute focus on my priority piece. Things improving there. Bookended that with some wedge and driver work. Finished up with about 30 minutes of short game. Working on distance control and all types of shots and lies. Short game is probably as good as it has ever been.
    • You should be able to install it yourself, honestly. You could easily blow it on and use some one-sided duct tape or something so it stays in place. That's what I've done with one of my grips.
    • Day 22 (12 July 26) - worked on putting tempo today using metronome for accurate tempo.
    • Hi all, My Edel putter seems to have developed a rattle.  I don't think it's a big deal, as I mostly hear it when I'm tapping down ball marks on greens.  However, I am debating getting it fixed, especially as I intend to play a lot of golf in August and September, and to continue playing regularly after that of course too.  My issue is I think fixing it would entail the fixer (golf shop repair station?) removing the grip and, presumably, applying a new one.  My problem is two-fold.   First, I like the grip on it, although after eleven years, maybe it's worth replacing.   The bigger (second) issue is getting the grip.  I don't like the flat-fronted putter grips anymore.  I have the round one on my putter, and I suppose I could buy one from Edel's website, but would a golf shop install a grip I bought elsewhere and brought in?  Or could they order one if Edel is not a supplier of theirs?  I don't recall ever seeing any Edel products in a Roger Dunn or PGA Superstore, although the era when I would go to a store and browse has long since ended (for better or worse).  I'd also wonder what the timetable is, as I'm leaving for a seven week trip in under three weeks. Any suggestions on what to do would be very welcome, whether about the rattle or the grip, together or independently.  Thank you!
    • I'm glad to know that picking up grass and letting it go doesn't help.  It felt like it shouldn't, but I'm glad to hear there's a good reason why.  It makes sense that wind is different higher up than it is near the surface. For a while, I was in the habit of checking the prevailing wind direction before playing.  That helped if I wasn't sure.  However, I still am not really sure whether something is a 5% wind or a 10% wind (and, of course, I know that a "helping" wind helps about half as much as the same wind hurting).   One of these days, I'll learn how to figure out what to do differently if the prevailing wind is 10mph vs 20 mph.
