Thanks once again.

My next question would be where do I learn competitive play rules? Do you guys know of a tutorial online? Also, how are they enforced? Is it an honor system or something?

Everyone plays by USGA rules.

Some leagues will relax certain rules for enjoyment, mainly beginner type leagues.

You can read the rules at USGA.Org or buy a rulebook, $3.95 at most golf shops.

You can also search TST - just type rules and there are many threads covering darn near everything.

As far as leagues for adult amateurs go, there are...

  • club leagues - mostly people from one course: men's and women's clubs, for example.
  • area leagues - people from many courses who play an "amateur circuit" event several times a summer. (MAGA, see below)
  • regional/national amateur leagues - This is the Golf Channel Tour, and a couple of similar ones I never can remember the name of.

In St. Louis, the Metropolitan Area Golf Association (operates under USGA) sponsors leagues and competitive amateur events.

Here's the site: http://www.metga.org/

MAGA has two main divisions.

  • MAGA Championship Series: ten invitational and open events; must have 7 HDCP or lower to enter.
  • Amateur Series: A monthly individual tournament April through September; you score points for finishing in the top 10 of these events; top 18 points leaders in each flight (open and senior) get to play in October championship. (Kinda like a poor man's FedEx cup points count)
  • **(MAGA also coordinates USGA area events such as local qualifying rounds for US Open and US Amateur events)

The Missouri Golf Association also has a long tournament season, but that involves more travel than the MAGA Amateur circuit.

I can't thank you guys enough. Also, I did not know that there was a difference bw "best ball" tourneys and "scrambles." The one where everyone uses the best shot and plays the ball from the best shot position is the one I'm not fond of.

There'd be scramble.   There are also stableford, team vs team, strokes play, skins.   I started playing tournaments last year and it has been fun.  Enjoy.

So when people on here talk about "playing the county open" and stuff like that.....are these league tournaments or just non handicap tournaments that people can pay a fee and sign up for?

Typically, I wouldn't think of that as a league tourny, but it might vary from place to place.
