I'm right handed and the last week my right big toe is swollen and painful. I normally play and hit quite a bit. This is new as I haven't really changed anything. I'm 67. Any thoughts about a prognosis. Last week I took ibuprofen and played on; not so today.

I'd have it checked out. If you don't recall jamming it or banging it into something, it could be something else.  I would ice it for a day or two and rest it a bit.  If it doesn't improve, have it looked at. It could be gout. My buddy has had that and the symptoms are similar.

Thanks. Gout, sounds worse and maybe more persistent.

But it can be treated successfully. Plus, you can tell your friend that you are full of piss and vinegar! My buddy was over it in a couple of weeks.

Personal experience here, if you've had gout once, it can come back.  Its caused by excess uric acid in the bloodstream.  When its triggered, the acid crystalizes in the small joints, causing the pain.  Triggers can be many different things, including alcohol, red meat (especially organ meat like liver), yeast products like bread or pasta, or any of a number of other good things to eat and drink.  Treatment can be only at the onset, or daily medication.  Consistently high uric acid levels are bad for the heart, so its worthwhile getting checked out.

I'd have it checked out. Nobody can diagnose you here based on your description your not even clear on. I'm pretty firm on these things because you may be putting off finding something more serious. I'll give you an personal illustration. My back hurt bending down to pick my golf ball up, tee it, etc. kind of lock up on me 3/4 through the round. Everyone said rest, ice, anti inflammatory. Funny thing - the MRI showed a cyst at the L disc and sciatic. Glad I went in. Pain is telling you something, or you wouldn't have posted. Sorry for being so firm.

Glad your getting checked and some of the posters recommendations are pretty sound so I apologize for being so adamant. You'll be up and running in no time, with proper treatment, diet, etc.

I started feeling a tingling in my toe about six months ago. I too thought it was turf toe but it turned out to be high uric acid levels.

    • Day 19: worked with foam balls for a while. Going slow to make sure I’m rolling and twisting. It feels weird, which is good. Going to take more work, but I’m on the way I think.
    • Day 39 (16 Apr 26) - Back to easy swings as the lead foot was overly tender from yesterday - stuck to some easy pitches with wedges and a few 1/2 tempo swings with 6i.  Was good to slow down and work on setup and overall alignment…
    • I saved the ball and wrote the details -- "my first eagle," course, hole number, and date on it.  Maybe I should write the yardage and the club too.
    • Day 8, April 16.  Continued pelvis turn drills after work today;  I've already spent 20 minutes doing this, am taking a short break (and have fulfilled the challenge for the day) and then I'm back to it.
    • Played 9 holes tonight. Driver is hit or miss, but I haven’t practiced that at all. It was a struggle to get sequencing down for the arms and lower body. I definitely have to do my downswing wrist piece a lot or I just push the crap out of the ball. Pitching needs some work. Chipping was good, chipped in twice. Putting was fine.  Shank Counter: 2
