Hi all, Haven't posted in ages so I thought I would pass along a pearl of wisdom to some of our newbies. "Golf is Cyclical!" Why don't we play well all the time or poorly all the time. It's why we keep coming back to the course. It's the reason that playing a good round is so enjoyable. So... The moral to this tale is to enjoy every round, good or bad. No club throwing, no fits. Just fun. Remember you low handicappers, this post is intended for the newbies... You guys can continue to throw clubs, scream and yell and curse the gods of golf.

"Golf" is also a four letter word for "frustration". :-D

I used to think that I would get better and better as the summer went on but I usually seem to peak in late June for some reason. I think by July I'm concentrating less, getting a bit burned out, and sometimes taking lessons which just lead to more inconsistent swings in the short term.

A month ago my chipping was really good. Now I'm sometimes making poor decisions and not hitting the spots I want. I can't explain why. I'm still chipping well on the practice greens.

It does not have to be-I have many students who are getting better.

Jazz, I think that a lot of golfers experience the peaks that you refer to. Look a jimmy walker, Geoff Oglevy, they always seem to start the season on fire and then fade as the season wears on. It's just golf. My golf has always been up and down. When playing well I can play par golf. When I slump I can play in the 90's. Who knows the answer. Which is why I encourage you to enjoy every round, good and bad.

I agree.

It doesn't have to be so cyclical. In fact, this site seems to show golfers the way to observe your own swing and maintain it, if not even improve it yourself.

If you're stuck or going down, I would suggest seeing one of the instructors like @Phil McGleno , @iacas , @mvmac or any of the other instructors on this site.

I agree 100% plus.  Never had much respect for folks who could not control their temper. Especially on a golf course. Unless the golfer battling is for $millions$, week in and week out, it's not something to get all riled up about when things go bad. Too many good things are also happening in a bad  scoring round.

A little over a year  ago I shot a triple digit round. Best round I shot because I was back on the golf course, which was not supposed to ever  happen again..

When your playing well, you can play par golf. How many holes can you play par golf on, out of 18? Sorry I seen your Handicap Index and just couldn't resist. LOL! I'm just kidding you.

I'm similar but I tend to peak late in the year instead. I work at it in the off season, but all the short game skill fall off. Simulators don't help with that.

It seems like short game skills are the first things to go, but end up being relatively easy to pick up again within a couple rounds. Also, I wonder if a simulator can be built to help with on short game throughout the year? I guess we didn't define slump? Maybe for most, it could be short game ability?
