Hey all

I bought myself a set of off the shelf Taylormade Burner 09's years ago. Played a bit here and there but ultimately never really enjoyed myself. I'm very keen to get back into golf now.

Unfortunately when I got my clubs they were standard with S shafts. I'm around 6foot4 and the clubs are too short. I don't really have a consistent swing as yet.

I have had my clubs looked at and had my swing assessed for changes that may be needed and longer shafts with potential lie angle changes are needed. Problem is there's a very high chance my clubs will break if i change lie angles.

I have been advised to sell up as my clubs are in very good condition and just start again. If I do this, the guy I'm seeing is thinking of fitting me up for Alpha RX-1's. Does anyone have any info re these clubs?

Last question would be is it worth me holding off on getting fitted and waiting until I have a consistent swing? Doing this and playing with my current clubs (which i would at least get extended) would lessen the value on them of course.

The guy selling me my clubs won't sell me a thing until he is happy with my swing which is good. Problem is what do i play with until then?

Not familiar with the Alpha clubs but it certainly can't hurt to get clubs that are a better fit for your height.

So do you think alterating what I have would be a good way to go or just start again? I have considered just lengthening my clubs and leaving lie angles as is. That would obviously lessen the value of my current clubs though of course

I did this with a set of irons. If you really like the heads and how they look, feel with good contact, it is certainly a good option. The proper shaft length and stiffness for your height and swing will help.

And do you think it's worth risking the lie angle change? As I said my club heads have been said to break when changing lie angles

That is what I would ask the fitter. If it's too risky, You could play with the slightly steeper lie.

PGA.com Value Guide puts the trade-in value of your Burner 2.0 irons at $57, and the resale value at $111. So, I wouldn't worry about lessening the value with tweaks.

If you can get the clubs lengthened, this would get you a season for your swing stabilize. Then, you could get fitted for a newer set of irons.

Also, if you're getting the Burners lengthened, go ahead and get any lie adjustment you need. As a fitting will show, shaft length and lie angle are related to each other.

The guy I've been seeing seems to thi k I could get $300aud for my clubs because they're in very good condition! He's also concerned about breaking them when changing the lie angle because they're quite stiff and he's had some snap before. If they're only worth $100 it could be worth the risk though

If you can find someone to even buy them I doubt you would get $100 USD, I'm not sure how that converts to AUD.

I also would shy away from non-brand clubs unless their price is significantly less than name brands.  For now, I'd get your Burners lengthened and see if you enjoy playing as much as you think.  If you do, then I'd make the investment in name brand clubs that are fitted to your swing so they will have more resale value should you want to upgrade and sell them.

That'll be about $140aud. What would make you shy away from smaller brands? I've had a chat to the guy fitting my clubs who is known to be the best club fitter in the state where I live and he doesn't really sell any big name brands. He believes brands like alpha are much better quality etc. Prices are the same mostly. I tried a set of Cobra Fly-Z XL's the other day with longer graphite shafts and they were still cheaper per club. Actually really liked them to be honest

The only issue with smaller brands is resale. You have to find customers who know about the brand. They still can be high quality, just not well know by golfers in general.

Exactly what Scott said, if you plan to hold them for a while, the brand doesn't matter.

Hey all. thanks for your advice

I've been hitting for a couple of weeks and talking to various people geting advice etc

I've decided I will sell my clubs and look into a second hand set more suitable to me and develop a consistent swing before forking out bigger money for custom fitted clubs.

I guess now I'd appreciate any advice on where some of the better places to get clubs are?

Thanks

You could also check RockBottomGolf who usually sells new in box older models of clubs at pretty steep discounts.

I think you're making the right choice here. Looking at recently sold listings on ebay those irons have been selling in the 180-275 range depending on condition and listing. Could be $300+ if they are the black/gun metal version.

If you are looking for cheap set with the specs you need, I'd look at ebay. You'll see a good number of sets with length and loft alterations and they'll often be cheaper than similar listings with standard specs.

Thanks for the tips guys What kind of clubs should I be looking for though? Any suggestions? Game improvements are the obvious go to type but does anyone recommend a particular brand or model? Thanks

@mando235,

Since you'er in Australia, this would change things on resale prices. TST posters from Australia and Europe indicate golf clubs are not as plentiful as here in USA.

So, your groups likely can get better resale for clubs than here in USA. Point taken!

Sold my irons for $330 today. That's roughly $230USD. Now the hunt begins for a new set of irons. Any advice re manufacturers or makes would be appreciated. Any thoughts on these? http://m.ebay.com.au/itm/331600488870?_mwBanner=1

    • Is it? I bought the Stack radar to replace my PRGR based on what Stack told me! When I am swinging for speed, the PRGR would miss 50%-80% of my backswings due to a higher speed. The stack seldom misses those- at least for me.
    • As an analyst by nature, I would like to compare the scores under both systems. It is something we can easily do if we have the data. I actually thought the new system was less fair to those whose game was on the decline - like mine! Old: Best 10 of last 20 scores with the .96 multiplier. Course handicap excluded course rating and overall par. New: Best 8/20. Course handicap includes course rating -par. My understanding is Stableford caps scores at Net double bogey like stroke play. If so, handicap should be slower to rise because you are only using 8 versus 10 scores. If I am missing something, I am curious enough to  want to understand what that may be. My home course tees that I play are 72.1/154 now. My best score out here is 82. When my game started to decline, my handicap didn’t budge for 13 rounds because of good scores in my first 8! I know I am an anomaly but my handicap has increased almost 80% in the past few years (with only a few rounds this year). For a few months I knew I was losing every bet because my game was nowhere near my handicap. I suspect I have steamrolled a few nuances but that shouldn’t matter much. When I have modeled this with someone playing the same tees and course, one good round, or return to form, will immediately reduce the handicap by some amount.
