Here's a list of the changes, which will be in play during this year's event held October 6-11 at Jack Nicklaus Golf Club in Incheon City, South Korea.

  • Total points available reduced from 34 to 30, with five four-ball matches and five foursome matches on Thursday and Friday, instead of six and six. Four four-ball matches and four foursome matches will be played on Saturday, instead of five and five.
  • Each player must compete in two of the first four sessions, with every player competing in Sunday singles. Team members were previously required to play in three of four foursome/four-ball portions.
  • The host team's captain will determine the order of the matches on Thursday and Friday, which was previously determined by competition agreement. In South Korea, it will be Price's decision which format (either foursomes or four-ball) is played on Thursday and Friday.
  • Any match that ends 18 holes all-square will not be taken to sudden death, as they were in the past, but instead will end with each team being awarded a half point, like the Ryder Cup.

The changes will make the Presidents Cup format more similar to that of the Ryder Cup, and should help to create more dramatic finishes.

What were the problems that prompted these changes?

But then again, what the hell do I know?

Not sure. The article did not say.

i think the last sentence sums up the "why"... they are trying to make it more "rc like"... with false hope, imo, but that is what they are hoping... i find it ironic that they tried for so long to differentiate themselves from the rc (no halves, everyone plays every match, etc.), and now they are changing to become more like the rc... i wish they'd just give up and throw the whole thing in the rubbish where it belongs...

I think they are seriously delusional if they think that the match format is why the Ryder Cup gets so much more interest.

Presidents Cup : Ryder Cup

=

Players Championship: PGA Championship

Poor imitations that the tour wants because it doesn't have any control over the real things.

i agree that they are delusional... but then again, i have never underestimated the ability of the pga tour to be delusional... :-P they live in their own little "ward and june cleaver world"... nice of them to make all these changes to "make it better"... just in time for it to take place in freaking korea.... which we just KNOW is going to raise the popularity of it, putting it in a place halfway around the freaking world from the usa, ensuring that the majority of play will happen while most of us are sleeping... and yes, i know that is a usa-centric viewpoint... but realistically, the tour is trying to sell the pc to the usa, not the rest of the world... rubbish it... please... i'd rather have another silly season event...
