Callaway XR vs X2 Hot. Any comparisons?

Hey everyone,

Been lurking here a while and here's my 1st post (yes, I know how to use the search function ).

Looking to upgrade/modernize my irons from my ancient Mizunos.  I thought I'd go with some Mizuno JPX variant but I really liked the Callaway XR that I hit (compared to JPX 850).  I can't afford a new set and there aren't many used XR sets out there yet.  Would the X2 Hots be pretty similar in play and feel?

I played Callaway until early this season, and have test-hit lots of their products through the years.

From a couple of different tests, I simply didn't like the X2Hot. It just felt strange, AND it had the Hallowe'en orange trim (!)

The XHot and XHot Pro felt much better. I liked both the XHot and the XR. XHot felt more aggressive, XR smoother.

Right now, Callaway Pre-Owned has:

• more than 30 XR iron sets available.
• 17 X2Hot sets
• 14 XHot sets

You might find used sets in some of the golf shops.

I haven't tested them myself but others have also told me that the XHot face was "hotter" than the X2Hot.  I really like the XR hybrids and woods.

I'd suggest for irons you go with the XHot and save yourself even more money.

Yeah, this would be a different story for the woods, but with the irons, cheaper is better.

I checked out every iron out there, old and new models. For me money wasn't really a problem but I also wasn't going crazy either. I for one settled on the XR irons. I liked the look and feel of the clubs and they got really good reviews on-line (I excluded the reviews on the Callaway web-site).

I have to admit, I can't get along with the look of the regular X Hots...  that extra bulbous bottom stuff just doesn't look right to me. It looks "added on".  I'd be OK with the X Hot Pro though.  In the X2 Hot they were able to concentrate that mass into a smaller area so it looks much better to me. Also, I'm coming from blade style Mizunos so I'm generally fine hitting irons with narrower soles.

I don't really need longer/hotter clubs...  I just want some that consistently go the same (predictable) distance and feel good while doing it!  That's where the XRs got my attention.  They felt better than the non-forged JPX 850s.  I should probably also try the JPX EZ Forged.

Ok, callaway pre-owned has everything at 20% off right now so I went for the XR Pro Irons!  Heck, with the $140 I "saved" on the irons I updated my 3W and 3H as well!

I play the X2 Hot hybrids, I love them, but my fiance plays the XR's (Irons, hybrids and metal woods: driver, 5 wood and 7 wood) and I hit those as well.  And they were very nice to hit as well.

I have always loved callaway products esp their irons. But im afraid imho callaway has lost their way. They still make great balls, apparel, and i still like a few of their woods but i havnt liked a set of callaway irons since the x 18s. Personally i hated the xrs and i told the callaway rep that straight up. Something about the weight and aesthetics was off to me. Also didnt care for the feel i. General.
