Golf course, northern NJ, business trip

Hello,

I'll go on a business trip to Rockleigh, NJ in second half of october and I'm looking for a golf course to play. Is there a good muni course around that anyone would recommend? Any other options with good value for money?

I guess it may be difficult to bring my equipment, so tips on where to rent equipment would also be highly appreciated.

This is not an answer to your question, but it reminded me that Trenton, the capital of NJ, does not have a golf course. If I'm wrong, someone please let me know what the course is. I would think that every capital city in the USA would have a golf course.

It's hit or miss. You may get 65 degree weather, or there may be 6" of snow. Hard to guess.

There is a TON of good golf in Bergen County (I grew up there).  It's one of the wealthiest counties in the entire United States.

Rockleigh actually has one of Bergen County's public courses:

I've never played there, but I have a feeling that it's pretty nice.  You may have to call to make a tee time as a non-resident.

If you don't mind driving a bit, Crystal Springs (about an hour away) has some fantastic courses, including Ballyowen:

Another decent public course is in Paramus:

I've played there - it's nothing fantastic, but well-maintained and fun.

I will actually be in Göteborg in a few weeks - we are doing Overseas delivery on a new Volvo.  I don't think golf is the cards, though...we'll only be there for a couple days (one of which is the Volvo factory tour).

Wow, I work for Volvo and that's why I go to Rockleigh! Well I invite you to play with me when you're here. I know all the courses around. Then we play again in NJ when I get over there!!! :-)

We (wife and I) will only have one day in Sweden (other than delivery day), so I think a round of golf would be a tough sell...(translation: no way in hell).

When will you be in NJ? I live about 6 hours away now, but I visit once in a while since my parents live there. It might work out as a good weekend for me to visit.

Rockleigh used to be my "home" course when I still lived in that area.  Rockleigh Red #4 is a nice water hole akin to that infamous TPC Sawgrass hole.  Nice little set of 3 9 hole courses.  The Blue was the easiest but also the one with a lot of work being done / to be done to it.

And you really can't go wrong with the Crystal Springs courses.

And the chance of snow on the ground in NJ in October is pretty slim.

Crystal Springs has some great courses depending on your preferences.  Ballyowen, Black Bear and Wild Turkey are the most popular and toughest I've played there.

Snow in October is pretty rare in NJ. Thanks to the Gulf Stream it's usually pretty good until at least Thanksgiving. Last year I played 4-5 rounds in the last week of December.

It's not 100% decided yet, but if I go I'm there it will be 20-25 Oct something.

      Day 16: range night! Worked on long game for about 40 minutes, with a good solid 20 minute focus on my priority piece. Things improving there. Bookended that with some wedge and driver work. Finished up with about 30 minutes of short game. Working on distance control and all types of shots and lies. Short game is probably as good as it has ever been.

      You should be able to install it yourself, honestly. You could easily blow it on and use some one-sided duct tape or something so it stays in place. That's what I've done with one of my grips.

      Hi all, My Edel putter seems to have developed a rattle.  I don't think it's a big deal, as I mostly hear it when I'm tapping down ball marks on greens.  However, I am debating getting it fixed, especially as I intend to play a lot of golf in August and September, and to continue playing regularly after that of course too.  My issue is I think fixing it would entail the fixer (golf shop repair station?) removing the grip and, presumably, applying a new one.  My problem is two-fold.   First, I like the grip on it, although after eleven years, maybe it's worth replacing.   The bigger (second) issue is getting the grip.  I don't like the flat-fronted putter grips anymore.  I have the round one on my putter, and I suppose I could buy one from Edel's website, but would a golf shop install a grip I bought elsewhere and brought in?  Or could they order one if Edel is not a supplier of theirs?  I don't recall ever seeing any Edel products in a Roger Dunn or PGA Superstore, although the era when I would go to a store and browse has long since ended (for better or worse).  I'd also wonder what the timetable is, as I'm leaving for a seven week trip in under three weeks. Any suggestions on what to do would be very welcome, whether about the rattle or the grip, together or independently.  Thank you!

      I'm glad to know that picking up grass and letting it go doesn't help.  It felt like it shouldn't, but I'm glad to hear there's a good reason why.  It makes sense that wind is different higher up than it is near the surface. For a while, I was in the habit of checking the prevailing wind direction before playing.  That helped if I wasn't sure.  However, I still am not really sure whether something is a 5% wind or a 10% wind (and, of course, I know that a "helping" wind helps about half as much as the same wind hurting).   One of these days, I'll learn how to figure out what to do differently if the prevailing wind is 10mph vs 20 mph.
