Ryder cup has more meaning as it has been going for longer. Pres cup has been a bit on sided so far, but that's how the Ryder cup was back in the day. Give it a few years and a few more international victories and there might be more passion for it.

Which do you prefer the most; the Presidents Cup or the Ryder Cup?

As a Brit (or Euro) of course I am slightly biased... partly because the Presidents Cup doesn't get half as much coverage as the Ryder Cup over here... and also because we don't stand a chance of winning the President's Cup...!?!

As Americans and Worldwide golfers I'd be interested to hear your views about the events and which one spins your wheels the most...!  Thanks, Guy

No contest. The Ryder Cup has much more prestige and significance than the Presidents Cup. The PC has never even been a competitive event, with the Internnational team winning only once in 9 tries, and the 2016 version looks equally non-competitive after yesterdays 4-1 debacle.

The Ryder Cup is by far better.  I think giving the sides a team to root against makes it more fun to watch.  Its very hard to root against the world.  The euro's have developed a friendly hatred towards the US and they hate losing.  I think the US is getting close to the same type of feelings towards their side.  It is going to make for great matches in the coming years!

I am struggling on why a president cup ... seems like a golf marketing ploy ... something to perhaps watch this time of year?

if i had to watch a team event i would prefer the Pres.  i cannot stand the jingoism that goes hand in hand with these events, from either side.  such a turn off. but its less of an issue for the Pres cup.

    • I'm not sure you're calculating the number of strokes you would need to give correctly. The way I figure it, a 6.9 index golfer playing from tees that are rated 70.8/126 would have a course handicap of 6. A 20-index golfer playing from tees that are rated 64/106 would have a course handicap of 11. Therefore, based on the example above, assuming this is the same golf course and these index & slope numbers are based on the different tees, you should only have to give 5 strokes (or one stroke on the five most difficult holes if match play) not 6. Regardless, I get your point...the average golfer has no understanding of how the system works and trying to explain it to people, who haven't bothered to read the documentation provided by either the USGA or the R&A, is hopeless. In any case, I think the WHS as it currently is, does the best job possible of leveling the playing field and I think most golfers (obviously, based on the back & forth on this thread, not all golfers) at least comprehend that.

    • Yes it's true in a large sample like a tournament a bunch of 20 handicaps shouldn't get 13 strokes more than you. One of them will have a day and win. But two on one, the 7 handicap is going to cover those 13 strokes the vast majority of the time. 20 handicaps are shit players. With super high variance and a very asymmetrical distribution of scores. Yes they shoot 85 every once in a while. But they shoot 110 way more often. A 7 handicap's equivalent is shooting 74 every once in a while but... 86 way more often?
