My son and I are playing in a parent/child scramble this coming Saturday. We talked about going to the driving range before the round to warm up. Someone told us that we would get disqualified for any practice before a round?????? I've been to the Web.com & Nike tour several times and the players are all over the driving range. I think they were out there before their round also. Can someone clear this up for me? Also, can you give me the number of the written rule for reference? Thanks, Jack

Hard to copy from the iPad but the rule is here: https://usga.org/Rule-Books/Rules-of-Golf/Rule-07/ Driving range is explicitly allowed by the exception to 7-1(b)

Yeah, you're just not allowed to practice ON THE COURSE the day of a tournament. Driving range is all good. :)

That only applies to stroke play.  For a match practice is allowed on the competition course.

Dkolo,

Thanks for the info.

Jack

However, it doesn't hurt to check with the tournament organizers.  Not all tournament organizers have an understanding of the rules and they can make up some strange rules.

    • Day 2 March 13th, 2025 Hit a small bucket checking stuff on video. Mostly back to controlling swing length and right elbow.
    • Video 1 of 2025 Lower body is better. Right knee kicks out less. Left knee straightens better. I don’t have that knee bounce post impact. Backswing and downswing with the arms, needs a bit of work. Nice OTT move there. Video 2 of 2025 - hey I can keep it short.  back to trying to keep the swing shorter and control the right elbow. Lots of half backswing feel and very straight arms. Also trying to start the downswing sooner so the swing doesn’t go on forever with the turn. Got to limit it to 90 degrees shoulder and 45 degrees hips.
    • Day 236: did a stack session.
    • Day 164 - 2025-03-13 Got the new QuadMAX. Didn't get a chance to test it, but got to Golf Evolution about 45 minutes before lessons, so I did some backswing and downswing work in.
    • @klineka has already addressed this stuff, but as I said in my first answer… distance control is typically more important. Knowing exactly how far a ball will carry is huge.
