I don't know why I continue to do this, but it causes major problems with both my driver and my irons.    I tend to pull my irons.   When I do this with the driver I end up with a terrible duck hook that just keeps going left.    When I try to set up the clubface open (what is probably in fact square), I feel very uncomfortable but I end up hitting much better shots, especially with the driver.    When I feel like I am going to slice the ball with my driver, I end up hitting great shots (at least great for me).

Anyone have any drills or tips to consistently set the clubface in the correct position at address?

I would first check if you have an too strong of a grip. I think some people can take a strong grip then turn their hands over so it doesn't look like they are gripping the club strong.

Besides that, just turn the club more open till it's square and grip the club.

I think you should definitely check your grip, but beyond that, it depends on the relationship between your hands and your left leg.

In this video , you will see that Rory has his hands positioned forward close to his left leg.  Try copying his setup and seeing how the club looks.  If it still looks closed, then your grip is too strong.  Chances are, your club is actually square but your hands are too far back.

Clubface alignment is all about impact.  At impact, your hands will be slightly ahead of the ball (hopefully), so naturally, if your hands are too far back, the clubface will look shut.

Use alignment rods on the ground to show you exactly what a square club face should look like and train yourself to see it properly.  Practice like that all the time and eventually (in theory at least) what looked open to you will look square and what looked square will now correctly look closed.

Get one of these assist trainers TM... usually you should start with an open club face or square then it rotates into the back swing. Buy on of these and just work on the take away like 200 times it also has a perfect grip trainer so your good. Don't even worry about full swing just takeaway and a baby follow through then repeat and eventually go hit full shots.

    • Is it? I bought the Stack radar to replace my PRGR based on what Stack told me! When I am swinging for speed, the PRGR would miss 50%-80% of my backswings due to a higher speed. The stack seldom misses those- at least for me.
    • As an analyst by nature, I would like to compare the scores under both systems. It is something we can easily do if we have the data. I actually thought the new system was less fair to those whose game was on the decline - like mine! Old: Best 10 of last 20 scores with the .96 multiplier. Course handicap excluded course rating and overall par. New: Best 8/20. Course handicap includes course rating -par. My understanding is Stableford caps scores at Net double bogey like stroke play. If so, handicap should be slower to rise because you are only using 8 versus 10 scores. If I am missing something, I am curious enough to  want to understand what that may be. My home course tees that I play are 72.1/154 now. My best score out here is 82. When my game started to decline, my handicap didn’t budge for 13 rounds because of good scores in my first 8! I know I am an anomaly but my handicap has increased almost 80% in the past few years (with only a few rounds this year). For a few months I knew I was losing every bet because my game was nowhere near my handicap. I suspect I have steamrolled a few nuances but that shouldn’t matter much. When I have modeled this with someone playing the same tees and course, one good round, or return to form, will immediately reduce the handicap by some amount.
