Nice job. Breaking 90 takes some people years. I remember the first time I did it and it felt great. I have been up and down most of the last two years but finished strong this year. My last two 9 hole rounds I had very legitimate chances to shoot in the 30's in 40+ MPH winds.

I am also excited that my 11 year old son told me he wants to learn to play golf. He has gone out and hit balls with us over the years and come out on the course to hit some as well, but never been very serious. It will give me a chance to spend some time with him and a reason to go to the range this winter. I plan to teach him the fundementals myself and if he enjoys it, I will look at lessons.

The weather held up enough today that I was able to finally get that first round in eight months played. It sure was an adventure, though. The course was nasty and that contributed to my final score quite a bit. It's a Par 68 course and I shot an 81. Looking back, I didn't do too bad, but during the round I felt like crap. I did record two birdies on the day. I'm proud of that.

Things I noticed:

- The first thing to go after an eight-month layoff is your driver. I couldn't hit the ball straight to save my life. When I did hit it straight, I couldn't hit it far AND straight. I got better as I went, but it took some time.

- My best club by far is my PW. I made a bunch of up and downs for par and the two for birdie. I would have had more birdie opportunities, but this course has no par 5's. I don't like that and will probably find another course to play on the next time I go.

- I need a partner. Golfing alone sucks. People either try to rush you ahead of them even when you tell them you're happy to play along behind and take your time, or they make you feel like you're playing to slowly and rush up on you, then give you sarcastic remarks and rude looks when you offer for them to pass so that you can take your time. My round only took me 3 hours yet I still had to deal with both of these situations.

- I'm getting better with my irons. I used to be able to hit 3-wood and 5-wood off the fairway no matter how far to the green, but now I'm using my irons and getting better results. They aren't getting on the green much, but they're becoming more accurate and on a line.

I can't wait to play again. Who knows when the weather will let that happen, though. Still, I had a blast overall and will not be waiting another eight months for sure.

You're so lucky to be able to play golf. Can I ask a question, you played even in the snow. How may I do that without gettting evicted for tresspassing? Also, the high temps here have been in the low 30's and high 20's so I need to wait until the grass is not frozen. I miss golfing so much. Guess I need to get to know the owners of the courses and make preparations to play in the snow with their blessings for next winter.

I'm sure there has got to be at least one course in your area that is open all year. I live in ohio and we have a few courses that are open year round even though the majority of winter is unplayable. Today I really wish I'd have gone out. Was up in the 50's and partly cloudy. Had a b-day party for the mother in law early this afternoon so couldn't make it. mrslice congrats on getting out for the first time in 8 months. 13 over doesn't sound to shabby for being away that long.

Here in Central Scotland, we're quite lucky in that we can play practically all year round.
Sometimes we get shifted to Winter Greens and Temporary tees (which makes it a drive and a flick on most holes), but at least it keeps the swing in shape.
This week is exceptionally cold with with -4 cen being the lowest.
Still, we managed to get a couple of rounds in. One advantage is that it only takes just over 2 hours to get the 18 holes in.
Occasionally, we'll take a trip to the coast (less than 50 miles either East or West). Conditions are usually a little better there thanks to the Gulf Stream warming the coastline up a bit.
Come to think of it... I may just head off to Troon tomorrow :0)

Well managed to get out again today. Pretty amazing for Jan. in Ohio. Was about 55 degrees today. I was going to stop at the course right by work but it was packed so I opted for a lesser played 9 holer down the road. 5 bucks to walk. Only other option would have been a boat. It was sloppy, soggy mud all they way around. Not really my idea of a good time but hey its golf in jan in ohio can't complain too much.

After hitting my tee shot on the first hole and seeing a huge splash of water in the center of the fairway I knew it wasn't going to be good. I went ahead and hit another tee ball on the first hole and tried to play to a "drier" area of the fairway. Lost both. Looked for a good 10 minutes and couldn't find either one. About turned around and left but figured it may be good practice from the slop.

Hit some good shots overall. Had to be carefull with the wedges or you'd get a facefull of water and mud every time. They have a short par 4 there that typically plays about 290. It was playing with the wind and again I hit two drives. Both found the green and plugged like you wouldn't believe. (I took some pics with the camera phone. I'll have to see how they look and see if i can get them up.) Had to use the divot tool to get one of the balls out. Sure wasn't a scoring round but it was fun to slop it around. Oh yeah wife wasn't too happy with the couple inches of mud up the bottom of the jeans either.

Played with the GM, the Head Pro (my boss), and a member that I'm a good buddy with today. Shot a rather uninspired 2 over 72. Holes 1, 4, and 5 missed some easy birdies from within 10 feet. If I'd have drained at least two of those I'm sure the day would have been better. Almost had a hole in one though on our bear of a par-3 14th, at 217 yards.

Thank you Eric.....
Today was a wonderful day. I have a couple of friends with whom i play usualy sundays at 8:00 am, and yesterday my back was killing me (it still is), but i had to go because i didnt call them to tell them i couldnt make it.
So i arrived there, and the driver was just bombing and the rest was, OK. I made 2 birdiesin the first 9 to score an awefull 50. the other 9, and my course's most dificult 9 as well, started with a par. Arriving at the 7th hole (par 3) 135 Yds, Red Flag (only 3 yards after a sand trap) i thought, go with the 9 iron and hit the center of the green, but then i followed my guts and went with the Pitching Wedge. Alligned, picked a spott when i could see the whole green (it's a downhill par 3), picked a ball, and hit it...... To my surprize it hit 1 yard short of the pin (or less), bounced forward and got in!!! For my short golf experience (6 months) it was a dream!
I ended shooting 39 in the 2nd 9 holes for a total of 89 (my career's second best)
Perfect weather, perfect caddy, perfect golf mates, 2 birdies, 1 eagle (hole in one), can i ask for more???
It was just, a perfect day........
Regards
Sergio

I got to hit balls for the first time since November and it felt great. I took my sons (7 and 11) to a golf dome and I hit about 25-30 balls in between trying to teach them a few basics. Unfortunately, you can only tell so much from a dome that is just 100 yards deep. However, I made great contact for the most part and the swing came easy. I tried to concentrate on hitting certain sections on the back wall and it worked well for me. I also had a great time with my kids which is even better.

made my semi-annual trip to L.A. last week (business), spend the weekend playing my butt off
Saturday I drove down to La Quinta - played the Mountain and Desert Courses (watching across the street PGA players during Bob Hope Classic ), 81 and 83, windy conditions, so I was pretty happy with it. Last Sunday I drove down to Riverside and played the Oak Quarry course in 20mph steady wind with gusts up to 60mph. I played two rounds there, morning without strong winds, afternoon it was just awful. Just to give you a picture:
par 5, 520 yards.
Morning round:
Driver, 5i, 3/4 wedge.
Afternoon round:
Driver, 3i, 3i, 5i, 3/4 wedge.
Sick. I won't mention the scores Course is very pretty, great views, but greens were very bumpy - two-colored grass, very patchy and uneven.
The best deal of the trip was my late afternoon round on friday @ Los Verdes (LA County Course). Really close to the ocean, beautiful views and with $15 twilight fee - a real treat. Highly recommended for L.A. travelers on a budget!

2 over 72.

Putting absolutely KILLED me!

missed 10 footer on 1
missed 6 footer on 3
missed 15 footer on 4
Just short in the jar from 20 feet on 5
3 putted from 10 feet on 6
Missed from 7 feet on 7
Lipped out on 10
Lipped out on 11
Lipped out on 13
Missed from 8 feet on 14
Missed from 6 feet on 15

That's 11 shots thrown away. ELEVEN!

Did make a 25 footer, on 18 (of course). Stupid game!

I guess I should tell myself that I'll make these things, instead of getting down on myself for not. Man that's annoying though.

Oooh, those La Quinta courses can be a real pain in the butt. I love the 3rd hole on Mountain. That par-5 along the edge of those jagged rock mountains. Fun hole.

    • @colin007, in terms of realistic sci-fi, its the best ever. They actually had an astrophysicist consult on the movie to be as accurate as possible with what we know about the universe.  For like dystopian, Blade Runner is probably king. Action/suspense is probably Alien/Aliens. Though Starship Troopers is fantastic. The Matrix is amazing.
    • Day 4 (August 14).  Full swing in my indoor practice room;  6-iron, off a mat, into a net.  Focus was on what I believe was my priority piece at last lesson (which, admittedly, was almost three years ago, due to absence).  I hit about a dozen balls this morning before going into the office.  (Also, errata to yesterday:  9 of the 12 coins were picked up on the second or third go around -- you can't pick up one on the first go around for that drill)
    • Watched The Gentlemen, took a little bit to get into it, but very good Guy Ritchie movie.  Collin Farrell and Hugh Grant were great. Give it a birdie.
    • Played in the Rhode Island CC Senior Member guest, my partner and I won the tournament. 2-day Stableford format, we ended with 104 points, won by 7. Points include 2 holes on each 9, where both players score count, can make up some points if you both play well on those holes.  @DaveP043has played a similar format (I played with Dann from RICC).
    • Played Wannamoisett CC on Monday.  What a neat old Donald Ross course, Par 69.  The conditions were immaculate, might be one of the best maintained courses, I've played.
