I played an absolutely terrible round of golf today. Managed to hit 6/14 fairways, but only 1 green. Ball striking was terrible and my swing was just off. I don't know what was off...but it was. I also couldn't compress the ball I was playing. I didn't really trust the guy at the golf store that sold it to me, but they were on sale and he said I would be able to compress it. Lesson learned.

Even as bad as I played, I still shot a legit 101.

Played in a tournament yesterday held by a supplier for work, it was a regional qualifying tournament for the main event held next month at a pretty flash course called Terrace Downs .

I started off pretty tentative, three putted first green for double bogey. But after I chipped in for birdie on the second hole (17th on the course) things started to come together better. On the front 9 it was a grind, the greens were so fast and I was playing my heart out. Bogey golf through all the holes and then a tripple on the 8th (Stroke 1) and I finished that nine with 17 stablefords. Then I started to turn it up on the back nine, bogey par bogey on the first three holes. Then came the final three holes, three par 5's in a row!! I duffed my first tee shot but salvaged bogey. Then had a good up and down for par on the next one. The last hole (the 15th) is the shortest par 5 on the course at only 410m (although is uphil and into a slight breeze). Hit two 3 woods to about 60m and then with my wedge stuck my ball 5 feet pin high. Sunk the putt to finish with a birdie and 22 points.

The top 8 scores got to go to Terrace Downs and I was 8th so better get out and do some more practice. Got 5 weeks!

My rounds are getting odd.

Front 9 was not so good. Shot 40.

Back 9 started with 2 pars.

On number 12 I had a Tin Cup hole. Par 5 - drive to left rough, left me 255 out. Went for it. Splash. Dropped at entry point. 4th stroke - 7 iron, chunk - splash. Drop. 6th stroke - thinned/toe hook - splash. Drop. 8th stroke - 7 iron to a foot-and-a-half, tap in quadruple bogey 9.

Then went birdie, par, par, par, birdie, par.

Dare I say 91... I thought I played like junk, but somehow kept recovering with my chip shots and it made my putting better because of it...

Played a scramble today at a cow pasture. Our team shot a -13 (58) to win by a stroke with 11 birdies and an eagle. We finished second last year, the first time any of us saw the course, a shot behind the 'club pro' and course members.

    • Never practiced golf when I was young and the only lesson ever taken was a driver lesson. I feel like I'm improving every year. However, the numbers don't support my feeling about improving. I usually drop to 12-13 during the summer while playing the familiar courses around home and then go on golf trips in the fall to new courses and increase to end the year between 15-17. Been a similar story for a number of years now but hey, it's the best thing there is in life so not too bothered but reaching 9.9 is the objective every year. Maybe a few lessons and practice could help me achieve it since I pretty much have no idea what I'm doing, just playing and never practice.
    • I am semi-loyal. Usually buy four dozen of one ball and only play that until out and then determine whether to continue or try another one. Since starting my semi-loyal path to success, I've been playing the below, not in order: ProV1 ProV1x ProV1x left dash AVX Bridgestone BXS Srixon Z-star XV I am not sure if it has helped anything, but it gives a bit of confidence knowing that it at least is not the ball (while using the same one) that gives different results so one thing less to mind about I guess. On the level that I am, not sure whether it makes much difference but will continue since I have to play something so might as well go with the same ball for a number of rounds. Edit: favorite is probably the BXS followed by ProV1/Srixon Z-star XV. Haven't got any numbers to back it up but just by feel.
    • Will not do it by myself, going to the pro shop I usually use after Cristmas for input and actually doing the changes, if any, but wanted to get some thoughts on whether this was worthwhile out of curiosity.
    • In terms of ball striking, not really. Ball striking being how good you are at hitting the center of the clubface with the swing path you want and the loft you want to present at impact.  In terms of getting better launch conditions for the current swing you have, it is debatable.  It depends on how you swing and what your current launch conditions are at. These are fine tuning mechanisms not significant changes. They might not even be the correct fine tuning you need. I would go spend the $100 to $150 dollars in getting a club fitting over potentially wasting money on changes that ChatGPT gave you.  New grips are important. Yes, it can affect swing weight, but it is personal preference. Swing weight is just one component.  Overall weight effects the feel. The type of golf shaft effects the feel of the club in the swing. Swing weight effects the feel. You can add so much extra weight to get the swing weight correct and it will feel completely different because the total weight went up. Imagine swinging a 5lb stick versus a 15lb stick. They could be balanced the same (swing weight), but one will take substantially more effort to move.  I would almost say swing weight is an old school way of fitting clubs. Now, with launch monitors, you could just fit the golfer. You could have two golfers with the same swing speed that want completely different swing weight. It is just personal preference. You can only tell that by swinging a golf club.
    • Thanks for the comments. I fully understand that these changes won't make any big difference compared to getting a flawless swing but looking to give myself the best chance of success at where I am and hopefully lessons will improve the swing along the way. Can these changes make minor improvements to ball striking and misses then that's fine. From what I understood about changing the grips, which is to avoid them slipping in warm and humid conditions, is that it will affect the swing weight since midsize are heavier than regular and so therefore adding weight to the club head would be required to avoid a change of feel in the club compared to before?
