Hi first post , so this is my first year taking golf seriously.  I bought a book by tom Watson , timeless swing. And have taken my first lesson with a PGA pro. I shoot normal between 46 and 50 counting all penalties and no mullegins etc. Just learning on my own , im hitting the ball much better than i ever have.  The last time i played 18 holes i had 9 pars. But i also alawys have blow up holes where i get a 8 or 10 etc . So my question is ? I have 3 different brands of irons in my bag . all cheaper with grips 4 years or older. Should I buy a new set of irons from a name brand . or buy a set of lessons from the same pro I had my lesson with,  as I felt it was a good lesson. Will appreciate your opinions on this thanks .

I think most everyone would tell you your irons should all be the same. Go back for more lessons and ask the pro, what he means get suggest for you.

Maybe you can do both? What's your budget? You can find some really nice used clubs for a great price.

Yea its driving me crazy, they all have a slightly different feel . I may go to the pro for my irons. because he said I can get them custom fitted there as well. But it will probably be much more expensive ?

I learned the game with a set of 1976 wilson staff blades so if your new stick with what you have or find a full set on the cheap until your ready to fork down more money for newer fitted equipment.

I'm sure I will do both . just not sure what to do first. Can't spend to much at one time. I just recently bought a calaway x2hot driver and 5 wood. Which I like . my budget for the irons is 800 max but would like to stay at or under 500 .it doesn't have to be the newest model . and used is OK but I worry about counterfeit models.

well I know I need lessons lol. Wasn't sure about the irons but looks like most replies recommend new irons . so I think I'm going to try the lessons package and see how much the fitting for clubs will be

You can pick up a new set of Cobra BioCell Irons for about $300. They still have these in some stores. Definitely online. You can still order some sets from Cobra direct if you're worried about counterfeit, but counterfeiters usually go after Ping, Titleist, and Callaway. They'll have steel shafts, though. Irons haven't changed that much in the past year. If you can get past the futuristic look on the back, they're a very nice set. Shaft flex will depend upon your swing speed. I've been playing with a set of these for a year. Then add a driver to the mix and you should be good until you can afford the rest of your gear.

well iv'e decided to do both lessons and irons for sure now . i'm going to start with lessons early next season . and my wife is OK with me getting fitted for a new set of irons. through the place where ill be getting my lessons. the fitting is free if i get the clubs there . the cobra bio cells look very good especially for 300 and they get good reviews.
