I'm also carrying two 3 woods.  One I can hit off the deck and one for the tees.  The 3 wood I hit off the tees I can't get airborne from the turf.  Really weird.  So that really makes 3 long clubs from the tees.  I need to sort that out.  Luckily (or unluckily), my longest iron is a 5 iron, so I have the extra spot in my bag.  I'm want to add a 4 iron eventually.

I said I picked up a Titleist 975 JVS the other day.  I hit it yesterday at the range.  I must say it has a tighter dispersion than any driver I've ever hit.  Easy to set up a power fade.  Can draw the ball, but never hit the big hook.  So I'm liking it so far.  I've got to hit some more, but I think the Ping may get punked.  Just not reliable and misses can be big.  Just not the right club for me.

I don't carry 2 drivers, but my 3W is 13.5 degrees, essentially a mini-driver without the name "mini-driver". I never use it off the deck. Only on tight fairways that have trees. No trees? Driver.

13.5* for a 3 wood is the least I've heard.  That's really a high lofted driver.

I agree completely. Few consider a driver a "scoring club", but every time I drive the ball well, I also score well.

Same here.  Seldom can you overcome bad driving and have a good round.  The course I play is not a difficult driving course because the rough isn't thick and most holes have one side you can favor for a miss.  That is huge.  But I need to tighten up that driver for those tough courses.

I love that driver, never had a better sense of where the clubhead was throughout the swing than with that club. What loft and shaft/shaft length did you get?

It sure does.  I think it may find a spot in my garage.

The drive is such an important part of the game, why not have two clubs for that.  I can adjust with one less wedge.

For me that one less club would be 3i or the equivalent of 4i or 5i? I'd still keep my 4i.

I wonder if you have: long drive 100% tee shot; shorter drive 85% tee shot and 70% with a 3W if you don't need long irons anymore? Especially if you have a rescue or hybrid? Perhaps just learn to hit that hybrid different distances? I generally use longer than 6i when I really mess up, and if I hit long enough on very long par 4 that I can use a 3i instead of a hybrid. With a long drive driver, I might only need a 4i?

My current setup allows me to tee off with driver to hybrid, and a long drive club would let me take on wide open holes a bit better? I would likely use it a lot on some courses and at least one or two times on very narrow courses like those in New England? Typically, narrow courses are usually shorter anyway, so possibly not?

Yeah, I agree that the drive is so important it should have more clubs for us amateurs. Even if you use it once or twice a round?

I have the driver now which I draw.  I can hit that long.  I have a 3 wood I hit off the tee for tight holes and it also draws.  About 240 or so is the max for the 3 wood.  Both clubs have an offset.  It eliminates the right side of the fairway, which is nice. They are really hard to consistently fade.  I don't trust them to do that.  I you don't have trust in a shot, you shouldn't do it.  But I have problems on holes which really require a fade.  The Titleist has a square face which I can setup for a fade nicely.

95.* with the Speeder S flex shaft.  I went to the range again today and I think I'm loving this club.  I'm on vacation Monday and Tuesday, so I'm hitting the links tomorrow.  Monday's are usually light at any course, so maybe I can play as a single and hit multiple tee shots.  We'll see how that goes.

I think after yesterday's round, I may just carry the Titleist for a while.  Just tighter dispersion and since I can move it both ways, particularly the fade, I will use it to try to be consistent.  I hit a couple of fairway bunkers off the tee because I expected it to move more than it did.

I'm just starting up again after a 20 year hiatus.  Back then I carried two drivers.

My go-to club was a 13.5 degree driver that I used 80% of the time.  I used to hit it consistently 260 yds.  I used this club off the tee most of the time and off the turf on long par fives to "try" and reach the green in two.  It was about 15 yards shorter than my regular driver, but was eminently more accurate.

My regular driver was a 9.5 degree driver that I used to hit consistently 275 yds.  The problem was I was not very accurate with this club so it only came out when I had a very open shot.

Later,

John

I agree, when I'm driving the ball well. It greatly increases my chances of breaking 80. That being said, No I don't, carry 2 drivers nor would I want to.

I feel like some people are splitting hairs here. I can't hit my 3W well enough off the turf to attempt it in a round (yet) so I guess you COULD consider that a second driver....or not. Who really cares?

I guess if you carry a 3W and never hit it off the turf, it would qualify.

    • I am currently playing a Cobra Ltdx LS 9 degree driver and Cobra Ltdx LS FW3. Both with Tensei White stock stiff shafts and original weights of 12g (heel) and 3g (toe). My miss is usually a pull fade or sometimes a slice, swing is out to in. Driver swing speed about 112 mph. Grips are stock regular. Intended change: Driver: Switching to Tensei White x-flex one inch shorter which I suppose would be 44,5? Changing heel weight to 18g. Changing grip to Golf Pride Z-grip cord midsize. Change hosel setting to standard draw. FW3: Changing heel weight to 16g (apparently not available in FW weights, but supposed to be something called "internal weight" a club builder can add which fits between the weight and the screw?). Change grip to Golf Pride Z-grip cord midsize. Changing hosel setting to standard +1. The goal is to 1) get better grip since I tend so lose grip in warm and moist conditions with the current grips and 2) mitigate the misses to start more straight with less side spin. Also considering adding the Cobra Ltdx LS FW5 instead of my old Taylormade R9 and getting 14g heel and 6g toe weights with the same grip as the others and hosel setting standard +1.   All of the above is based on conversations with ChatGPT and, as everyone knows, it can come up with pretty much whatever but I spent a few hours asking about different perspectives etc and this was the recommendation. So, my question is basically, does it make any sense?   Thanks.
